EXPLOSIVE FIRST PERIOD HELPS WOMEN’S HOCKEY TOP FINLANDIA

HANCOCK, MI – The UW-Eau Claire women’s hockey team found the net three times in the first period as it took care of Finlandia University (MI) by the score of 4-1.

The Blugolds improve to 4-4-2 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Associations (NCHA) and 10-7-2 overall. They are third in the NCHA with 10 points. Finlandia is 0-8-1 in conference play while going 4-13-2 in all games. The Lions are last in the NCHA.

Eau Claire scored early and often in the first period, with Martina Korinek (Sr.-White Bear Lake, MN) collecting the first goal 2:15 into the game. Kelly Ivey (Jr.-Apple Valley, MN) assisted on the evenhanded strike. The Blugolds notched their only power-play goal at 8:29 with Laura Suppes (Sr.-Roseville, MN) scoring and Michelle Stohr (Fr.-South St. Paul, MN) and Allison Campbell (Sr.-Plymouth, MN/Wayzata) assisting. The third goal at 17:37 was shorthanded as Karen Hebert (Sr.-Lakeville, MN/Holy Angels) found net while Suppes and Hannah Kinney (Fr.-Avoca/Riverdale) assisted.

After the Lions scored their lone goal of the game early in the second, Eau Claire retook the three-goal lead at 7:40 in the final period. Beth Dittrich (Fr.-Roseville, MN) had the evensided goal while Korinek assisted.

Mikaela Jobman (Fr.-St. Paul, MN/Cretin Derham Hall) picked up the win, making 14 saves. The Blugold offense outshot the Lions 19-to-15 and both teams cashed in one power-play each. Eau Claire had seven chances and Finlandia had nine. The Blugolds tallied 10 penalties to the Lion seven.

Saturday the Blugolds travel to face NCHA-leading UW-River Falls. Face-off is at 2:05 p.m..
