WOMEN'S HOCKEY POWERS PAST ST. MARY'S

EAU CLAIRE - On the strength of two power play goals the UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team defeated St. Mary's (MN) 2-0 here tonight at Hobbs Ice Center.

The win improves the Blugolds overall record to 6-7-1. The Blugolds are now one win away from being .500 for the first time since starting the season 3-2. The Cardinals fall to 2-9-2 being outscored 7-2 in two games against the Blugolds this season. The win marks the third straight victory for Eau Claire over St. Mary’s.

Forward Martina Korinek (Sr.-White Bear Lake, MN) scored the first goal of the evening at 11:51 of the first period assisted by Lauren Havard (So.-San Angelo, TX/Arapahoe) giving Eau Claire a 1-0 lead. Korinek now leads the Blugolds with 11 points and six goals scored this season.

The Blugolds went on to add an insurance goal at 1:57 of the second period when defenseman Michelle Stohr (Fr.-South St. Paul, MN) scored off the power play assisted by Allie Campbell (Sr.-Plymouth, MN/Wayzata). Stohr is tied for the team lead in power play goals with three and is second with five goals overall.

Goalie Mikaela Jobman (Fr.-St. Paul, MN/Cretin Derham Hall) saved all 12 shots faced including seven in the third period alone. The shutout was the first for the Blugolds since a 0-0 tie February 17, 2006 at Finlandia (MI).

Overall the Blugolds outshot the Cardinals 40-12 while being whistled for four penalties for eight minutes compared to nine penalties totaling 18 minutes for the Cardinals. The Blugolds went 2-for-8 on the power play while the Cardinals went 0-for-3.

Up next the Blugolds return to Hobbs Ice Center to face St. Catherine (MN). Face-off is scheduled for 7:00 P.M.
