WOMEN'S HOCKEY STARTS THE NEW YEAR WITH A WIN

EAU CLAIRE - The UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team avenged an earlier loss this season to Bethel (MN) by defeating the Royals 4-2 here tonight at Hobbs Ice Center.

The Blugolds improve to 4-6-1 on the season and end a five game winless streak. The Blugolds lost at Bethel 5-3 in the first game of the season and have won 9-of-10 games against the Royals.

The four goals scored by the Blugolds is the second-most goals scored in one game this season. Eau Claire defeated St. Mary’s (MN) 5-2 on November 7 to notch their first win of the season.

The Blugolds got on the score board first as Martina Korinek (Sr.-White Bear Lake, MN) scored a short-handed goal at 5:56 of the first period to give Eau Claire a 1-0 lead. It was the first short-handed goal for Korinek and second for the Blugolds this season.

Entering the second period tied 1-1 Laura Suppes (Sr.-Roseville, MN) hit the back of the net assisted by Margaret Campbell (So.-Plymouth, MN/Wayzata) at 9:25 to help regain the lead for the Blugolds at 2-1.

Beth Dittrich (Fr.-Roseville, MN) extended the lead to 3-1 as she scored a goal assisted by Korinek at 7:43 of the third period.

The Royals cut the lead to 3-2 before Lauren Havard (So.-San Angelo, TX/Arapahoe) ended the scoring on the evening with a goal assisted again by Dittrich at 16:11 of the third giving Eau Claire a 4-2 advantage.

Bri Lutz (Fr.-Burnsville, MN) saved 11-of-13 shots faced on the evening including five saves in the third period. Both teams went 0-for-4 on the power play as each team was whistled for four penalties totaling eight minutes.

The Blugolds returns to the ice this weekend when they travel to Northfield, Minnesota to face St. Olaf College on January 6 and 7.
