WOMEN'S HOCKEY FALLS IN SEMIS TO SUPERIOR
SUPERIOR - The fourth-seeded UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team allowed 51 shots on goal en route to a 4-0 loss to top-seeded UW-Superior here tonight at Siinto Wessman Arena in semifinal action of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association tournament.
The Blugolds fall to 10-14-2 for the season and will battle UW-River Falls in tomorrow afternoon's third place game. The Yellowjackets improve to 19-6-1 overall and will face UW-Stevens Point, who defeated River Falls 2-1 in the other semifinal game, in the championship game tomorrow afternoon.
The Blugolds skated with the explosive Yellowjacket offense for the first period as Sara Steinhoff (So.-West St. Paul, MN/Henry Sibley) stopped all 22 Superior shots she faced while the Blugolds managed just six shots on Yellowjacket goalie Kristy Faechner.
The second period was a different story as Superior snuck three shots past Steinhoff. The Blugolds tallied nine shots on goal but were unable to cut into the three goal deficit.
The Yellowjackets added another goal in the third period to finish the scoring at 4-0.
Steinhoff played all 60 minutes in goal for Eau Claire and made 47 saves.
Eau Claire will face River Falls tomorrow in Superior at noon for third place bragging rights.
