WOMEN'S HOCKEY FALLS TO SUPERIOR
SUPERIOR - The UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team were outshot 31-9 by ninth-ranked UW-Superior but kept the game close losing only 3-1 here today at Wessman Arena.
After a scoreless opening period the Yellowjackets got on the board with a goal 8:14 into the second period. Superior would add an unassisted goal before the end of the period to send the Blugolds into the final period trailing 2-0.
Karen Hebert (Fr.-Lakeville, MN/Academy of the Holy Angels) pulled the Blugolds within one goal after converting on an Allison Campbell (Fr-Plymouth, MN/Wayzata) pass with 6:59 remaining. Superior was able to hold Eau Claire at bay scoring a shorthanded goal with 15 seconds left for the final margin.
Sara Steinhoff (So.-West St. Paul, MN/Henry Sibley) played all 60 minutes in goal making 28 saves.
The Blugolds committed 7 penalties for 14 minutes while the Yellowjackets committed 5 penalties for 10 minutes. Eau Claire and Superior combined to go 0 for 6 on power play attempts.
Eau Claire falls to 8-13-2 overall and 3-11-0 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association. Superior improves to 17-5-1 overall and 11-3-0 in the NCHA.
The Blugolds will be in action next when they host NCHA opponent Lake Forest Friday at Hobbs Ice Center. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m.
