WOMEN'S HOCKEY STUNG BY THE YELLOWJACKETS
SUPERIOR - The UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team was outshot 43-19 en route to losing to ninth-ranked UW-Superior 5-1 here tonight at Wessman Arena.
The Blugolds got off to an early lead scoring 9:20 into the first period. Martina Korinek (Fr.-White Bear Lake, MN) took a Laura Suppes (Fr.-Falcon Heights, MN) pass and slipped the puck past Superior goaltender Elyse Dowdell to go up 1-0.
The Yellowjackets would score before the period ended to send the game into the first intermission tied at one. Superior would add to their lead in the second period scoring three goals on 21 shots to send the game into the final period with Eau Claire trailing 4-1.
Superior added the final goal of the game with 14:29 remaining in a penalty-marred final period. Each team committed three penalties in the third period after only three combined penalties in the first two periods.
Eau Claire falls to 8-12-2 overall and 3-10-0 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play. Superior improves to 16-5-1 overall and 10-3-0 in the NCHA.
The Blugolds and Yellowjackets will face off again tomorrow night at Wessman Arena. The game is scheduled to begin at 2:05 p.m.
