WOMEN'S HOCKEY DEFEATS NINTH-RANKED ST. THOMAS

EAU CLAIRE - The UW-Eau Claire women's hockey team used three second period goals to defeat ninth-ranked University of St. Thomas 3-2 here tonight at Hobbs Ice Center.

The Blugolds trailed 1-0 going into the second period but quickly tied the game 1:17 into the period. Laura Suppes (Fr.-Falcon Heights, MN) took passes from Martina Korinek (Fr.-White Bear Lake, MN) and Tara Hayner (Fr.-Stillwater, MN) to even the game at one apiece.

Korinek would add a goal of her own when she took a Christa Hebert (Jr.-Blaine, MN) pass to give the Blugolds a 2-1 lead with 11:05 remaining in the period. Connie Cameron (Sr.-Chippewa Falls) would add some much needed insurance when she scored off a Megan Oswall (Jr.-Stevens Point/SPASH) pass with 1:31 left in the period.

St. Thomas would pull within one goal with 12:26 left but Tara Berlute (Jr.-Bloomington, MN/Holy Angels) held the Tommies scoreless the rest of the way to give the Blugolds a 3-2 for their fourth win of the year.

Eau Claire outshot St. Thomas 30-26 with each team committing three penalties for six minutes.

The Blugolds will be in action next when they travel to St. Mary's University Tuesday. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m.
