SOBOTTA LEADS WOMEN’S GOLF AT DIVISION III CHAMPIONSHIP

WAVERLY, Iowa – After four days of competition at the 2008 NCAA Division III Championship, Meghan Sobotta (Sr.-Arcadia, Wis.) finished in fourth place as the UW-Eau Claire women’s golf team brought home a 13th place finish out of 20 teams at Centennial Oaks Golf Club today.

Sobotta, a first team All-American, tied for the best round of the day in the 109-golfer field, shooting 71 (-1) for a total of 300 strokes at the championship. She finished only three strokes behind Franklin College’s Katie Tewell and Methodist University’s Katie Dick, both of whom also shot 71 today and finished tied for second, and six strokes behind individual national champion Susan Martin of Methodist. Last season Dick was the individual champion, Tewell finished in third and Sobotta completed the championship tied for 21st.

Methodist University (N.C.) won its 11th consecutive national title with a dominating performance, leading the field by 39 strokes. Methodist had the day’s best round (304) and finished with 1,219 strokes. DePauw University (Ind.) took home second place with 1,258 strokes, while Southwestern University (Texas) shot 1,263 as it finished third.

Torie Ives (So.-Osseo, Wis./Osseo-Fairchild) ended the championship tied for 37th with 323 strokes overall (80-86-78-79), while Bri Obermueller (So.-River Falls, Wis.) totaled 341 strokes and finished tied for 86th. Katie Swift (Fr.-Onalaska, Wis.) had her second best finish at the championship, shooting 84 today for 344 strokes overall. She finished tied for 89th. Sarah Hansen (Sr.-Bangor, Wis.) finished in 99th place with 352 strokes overall.

This was the eighth consecutive appearance for the Blugolds at nationals. Last season the team finished seventh at the tournament.
