MEN'S TRACK NARROWLY NOTCHES FIRST PLACE FINISH
MENOMONIE - By a narrow margin of 2.50 points, the UW-Eau Claire men's track team took the top spot out of seven competitors at the Warren Bowlus Open with a 193 score. UW-Stout was the team that just fell short, having 190.50. Hamline University took third with a 113 showing and UW-Superior followed at 31 points. Michigan Tech University claimed the five spot on 19 points. The team had two individual champs today and also a top place group effort. Chris Kupfer (Fr.-Germantown) continued his early season success as he won the 200-meter dash on a 22.77 race. Brent Tice (Sr.-Colfax) took first in the shot put with 47-11.75 (14.62 meters). The relay team had a superb meet as well by taking first in the 4x400 meter race with a 3:26.27 display. Dan Roemhild (So.-Fall Creek) also had an impressive day, though he could not quite reach the top spot. Roemhild finished second in the triple jump on an effort of 41-9.75 (12.74 meters) and in the long jump with a distance of 21-1.5(6.44 meters). The Blugolds dominated in several events to help push the team over the top. In the 1-mile run Micah Hernandez (Sr.-Milwaukee/Wisconsin Lutheran) took second in 4:25.90 while Ted Lillie (So.-North St. Paul, MN) was third at 4:31.36. Eau Claire took third and fourth in the 55-meter hurdles with an 8.12 race from Matt Crosby (Fr.-Glenwood City) and an 8.41 showing by Brian Christ (So.-Arcadia). Dan Pederson (So.-Boyceville) helped exert Eau Claire control on the triple jump with a third place finish at 40-6 (12.34 meters). The Blugolds took third, fourth and fifth out of 21 people on the weight throw. Matt Smith (Sr.-Buffalo, MN) had 52-.75 (15.87 meters), Sam Johnson (Fr.-Amery) tallied 51-1.75 (15.59 meters), and Ryan Brohmer (Jr.-La Crosse/Logan) managed 50-2.5(15.30 meters). Many other Blugolds contributed to the first place day with finishes in the top three. These included Nick Aliota (Jr.-Brookfield/Central) in the 55-meter dash, Bryan Tschudy (Fr.-New Richmond) in the 200-meter dash, Grant Haugan (Fr.-Green Bay/Ashwaubenon) in the 400-meter dash, Jules Miller (So.-Green Bay/East) in the 3000-meter run, Ben Wulterkens (So.-Stanley/Stanley-Boyd) in the high jump and Al Oleson (Jr.-Wausau/West) in the shot put. This is the second first place meet for the team this year. The Blugolds have only been beaten by three teams in all meets combined thus far.
