LA CROSSE MEN TAKE 14TH STRAIGHT, OSHKOSH WOMEN TAKE FIRST

EAU CLAIRE - The UW-La Crosse men won their 14th consecutive outdoor championship while the UW-Oshkosh women stopped La Crosse's six-year run on top at the 2004 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships concluded here today at Simpson Field.

The La Crosse men took home nine first place finishes. Andrew Rock took first place in both the 200- and 400-meter dash for the fourth consecutive year. Rock set the facility record in both events finishing the 200 in 20.93 seconds and the 400 in 46.18 seconds.

Matt Pagel won the 100-meter dash for the second consecutive year with a time of 10.76 seconds. Derek Toshner won the 400-meter hurdles for the third consecutive year with a facility record time of 51.83 seconds.

Mike Turgeon won the discus throw for the fourth consecutive year with a facility record toss of 177-2 feet (54.01 meters) while Hans Schmidt won the pole vault for the second year in a row. Chris Walters won the javelin throw with a toss of 182 feet (55.49 meters). La Crosse also took first in the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays.

UW-Whitewater took first in four events. Jeremy Wendt won the hammer throw for the third consecutive year with an Olympic Trials qualifying and conference and facility record toss of 218-1 feet (66.48 meters). Todd Gannon won both the long and triple jump. Gannon jumped 23-4 ½ feet (7.12 meters) in the long and 46-11 feet (14.30 meters) in the triple. Tyler Fyock finished first in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

UW-Stevens Point had three first place finishes. Andrew Schliepp took first and tied the facility record in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.50 seconds. Curtis Johnson took first in the 5,000-meter run while Mark LaLonde took first in the 10,000 meter run.

UW-Oshkosh also took first in three events. Tom Roszak finished first in the high jump, Steve Nowak first in the decathlon and 4x800-meter relay team took first.

Platteville's Ryan Kleimenhagen took first place and set the facility record in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:51.64. Kleimenhagen took first in the 1,500-meter run for the second consecutive year with a time of 3:52.86.

UW-Eau Claire's John Schuna took first place in the shot put for the second time with a toss of 56-2 feet (17.12 meters).

The Oshkosh women finished first in seven events. Liz Woodworth took first place in both the 800- and 1,500-meter runs for the third consecutive year. Woodworth set the conference and facility record in the 800 with a time of 2:09.43 and the facility record in the 1,500 with a time of 4:31.43.

Robyn Jarocki took first place in the shot put, discus and hammer throw. Jarocki set the conference and facility record in the hammer throw with a toss of 183-10 feet (56.04 meters), set the facility record in the discus with a toss of 161-9 feet (49.31 meters) and won the shot put with a throw of 46 ½ feet (14.03 meters).

Julie Hoch won the heptathlon for the second straight year with a score of 4,462 with the Oshkosh 4x800-meter relay team also taking first.

The La Crosse women also had seven first place finishes. Angela Klatt won the 200-meter dash for the fourth consecutive year and 100-meter dash for the third straight year. Klatt won the 200 with a time of 25.24 seconds and the 100 in 12.14 seconds. Klatt set the facility record in the 200 in the prelims with a time of 24.94 seconds.

Julia Rudd took first place in both the 5,000-meter run and 3,000-meter steeplechase. Rudd took first in the 5,000 with a time of 17:31.72 and the 3,000 with a facility record time of 10:40.57. Angela Hilgers won the pole vault for the second straight year with a facility record 12-4 ½ (3.77 meters) while the 4x100- and 4x400-meter La Crosse relay teams also took first.

UW-Stevens Point had first place finishes in three events. Nicki Van Gheem won the 10,000-meter run with a time of 39:28.32, Marie Burrows won the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.09 seconds and Becky Clarke won the javelin throw with a distance of 125-8 feet (38.31 meters).

UW-Eau Claire and UW-Stout each took first place in two events. Ashley Nelson set the facility record in the long jump with a distance of 19-1 feet (5.82 meters) while Jen Stafslien took first in the 100-meter hurdles for the second consecutive year with a time of 14.88 seconds.

Stout's Laura Verdegan set the conference and facility record in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.71 and set the facility record in the triple jump with a distance of 38-3 ½ feet (11.67 meters).

Jill Crandel of River Falls took first place in the high jump with an effort of 5-5 ¾ feet (1.67 meters).
