BRUMUND-SMITH, McMULLEN ADVANCE AT NATIONALS
CANTON, N.Y. - John Brumund-Smith (Sr.-Waunakee) and Breanna McMullen (Jr.-Fall Creek) both advanced to the finals of the 400-meter hurdles today at the 2003 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships held here today at the Merrick-Pinkard Track complex on the St. Lawrence University campus.
Brumund-Smith advanced to the finals after taking third in his heat with a time of 53.68 seconds. Conference rival and last year's winner Derek Toshner of UW-La Crosse also advanced to the finals with his track record time of 51.66 seconds.
McMullen took second in her heat to advance and also bettered the previous track record with her time of 62.13 seconds. Last year's winner Jessica Jensen of Buena Vista University also advanced to the finals with a time of 62.21.
Stephanie Barnes (Fr.-Sauk City/Sauk Prairie) broke the previous track record in the pole vault competition and finished tenth out of 19 competitors after clearing 3.53 meters.
John Schuna (So.-Hudson) failed to advance in the discus competition after taking fifth in his heat with a throw of 49.56 meters. Brooke Wozniak (Jr.-Stanley/Stanley-Boyd) also failed to advance in the women's discus competition after placing seventh in her heat with a throw of 42.43 meters.
Tomorrow's action includes the women's triple jump final featuring Jennifer Stafslien (So.-Onalaska/West Salem) starting at 6 p.m. Stafslien and McMullen will both be competing in the 100-meter hurdles preliminaries beginning at 6:15 p.m.
