MEN'S TRACK CLAIMS SECOND AT PHIL ESTEN CHALLENGE
LA CROSSE - The UW-Eau Claire men's track and field team earned four place victories en route to a second place finish at the Phil Esten Challenge held at Veteran's Memorial Stadium.
The Blugolds finished with 49 points while UW-La Crosse took home first place with 123. UW-Stout claimed fourth place with 32 points while La Crosse's second team took the fourth and final position with one point.
Zach Severson (Fr-Sun Prairie) was one of four Blugolds to claim first place in his respective event. Severson took first in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:00.75.
John Schuna (So-Hudson) claimed first in the shot put competition with a throw of 54-02.50. The distance automatically qualifies him for national competition.
Matt Goertz (Jr-Manitowoc/Lincoln) earned another Blugold first place finish as he claimed the 3000 meter steeplechase title. Goertz finished with a time of 9:37.69.
Kurt Heilman (Sr-Kenall/Royal) rounded out the Blugolds top finishes with a victory in the high jump. Heilman cleared a height of 6-02.75.
The Blugolds will be in action next Saturday at the Carleton Relays in Northfield, Minnesota.
