MEN’S TENNIS CRUISES TO A PAIR OF WINS

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The UW-Eau Claire men’s tennis team added to its eight game winning streak on Sunday afternoon, defeating Minnesota State-Mankato 7-2 and Hamline University (Minn.) 9-0.

With the pair of wins, the Blugolds move to 19-3 overall. Eau Claire has not lost since March 1st when they were defeated by national powerhouse Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) 8-1.

Steve Lantz (Jr.-Rochester, MN/Century) and Lars Olson (Fr.-De Pere, WI) lead the Blugolds into competition today against Minnesota State playing in the number one and two singles spots. Lantz was victorious in his match by a score of 6-3, 6-1. Olson also tallied a decisive victory taking his match in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. While Lantz and Olson were taking care of the one and two spots, the rest of the team took care of business as well winning all but one singles match.

The Blugolds were equally effective in doubles competition taking two of three. Lantz and Phil Loprinzi (So.-Rochester, MN/Mayo) took care of the number one doubles spot with an 8-3 victory. In the number two spot Olson and Kevin Fawcett (So.-Madison, WI/Verona) beat their opponent by the same score.

In the 9-0 shutout of Hamline, Olson stepped in at the number one singles spot and defeated Dan Vogel 7-5, 7-5. Chris Thornton (Fr.-St. Paul, MN.Cretin-Derham) turned in the most lopsided victory for the Blugolds, beating his opponent 6-0, 6-0.

Hamline did not prove to be any more of a challenge for the Blugolds in doubles play as the Blugolds won going way in all three doubles spots. The number one team of Lantz and Loprinzi won 8-2, the number two team of Olson and Fawcett won 8-4, and the number three team of CJ Rose (Sr.-Lakeville, MN/Apple Valley) and Aaron Johnson (Fr.-Elk River, MN) won 8-1.

The Eau Claire men’s tennis team will travel to Rock Island, Illinois and Mequon, Wisconsin next weekend in hopes of continuing its winning streak.
