MEN’S TENNIS TAKES TWO HOME DUAL MEETS

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – Hosting two dual meets, the UW-Eau Claire men’s tennis team upended both opponents 9-0 at the Ade Olson Addition of the McPhee Physical Education Center today.

The Blugolds are now 5-1 on the season, with their only loss coming against NCAA Division II opponent St. Cloud State last weekend. To date, Eau Claire has won three meets by 9-0 margins.

In the first meet of the day, the Blugolds faced Ripon College, which opened its season with an 8-1 loss to UW-Oshkosh on Friday. At No. 5 and No. 6 singles, Lars Olson (Fr.-De Pere, Wis.) and Mike Olson (Fr.-Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine) both swept their opponents in straight sets, not giving up a point. Kevin Fawcett (So.-Madison, Wis./Verona) and Lars Olson also won by the largest margin of the meet in doubles play, with a 8-1 victory over Jay Hardacre and Ben Sweeney, in the No. 2 spot.

In the middle of the day, Ripon and the Macalester College Scots faced each other before they played the Blugolds. Macalester won the meet against Ripon 7-2. The meet was the first of the season Scots.

Without Fawcett playing in the meet against Macalester, the Blugolds were able to fill in and take a 9-0 victory over the Scots. Eau Claire needed two super tiebreakers at No. 3 and No. 5 singles to not allow the Macalester to win the matches. Erik Brandner (Sr.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) did just enough at No. 3 singles to win 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 over Macalester’s Paul Mairet. Aaron Johnson (Fr.-Elk River, Minn.) saw his first action of the season at No. 5 singles tonight and came up big, winning 6-3, 4-6, 10-8.

The Blugolds will now have a few days off before they travel to Decorah, Iowa for a meet on Friday and two on Saturday. Friday they will face Cornell College at 7:30 p.m. They will then take on Luther College at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, followed by a meet against Loras College at 11 a.m.
