BLUGOLDS THIRD AFTER FIRST DAY OF NCTA CHAMPIONSHIPS

LA CROSSE - The UW-Eau Claire men's tennis team holds third place after the first day of competition at the 2003 Northern Collegiate Tennis Association Championships held here today.

The doubles portion of the championships was held today with UW-Oshkosh taking first in both the number one and two doubles slots. Host UW-La Crosse took first at the three doubles slot.

At one doubles for the Blugolds Matt Widder (Jr.-Sheboygan Falls) and Adam Arians (Jr.-Mankato, MN/Loyola) fell to Whitewater in the third place match 9-7.

Ryan Gruhlke (Sr.-Eau Claire/Memorial) and Chris Slagle (So.-St. Paul, MN/Cretin-Derham Hall) also advanced to the third place but were victorious defeating the Winona State tandem 8-6.

In three doubles the tandem of Tyler Litscher (Fr.-Eau Claire/Memorial) and Bob Hartman (Fr.-McFarland) advanced to the championship round before falling to La Crosse 8-5.

La Crosse holds first place after day one followed by Oshkosh and Eau Claire. UW-Whitewater, Winona State and the University of Minnesota-Morris rounds out the competition.

The championships will conclude tomorrow with singles action beginning at 9 a.m.
