MEN’S GOLF ANNOUNCES TEAM AWARD WINNERS

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – UW-Eau Claire head men’s golf coach Jim Maguire recently announced the team award winners for the 2007-08 season.

The team’s Most Valuable Player award was given to Pete Wendt (Sr.-Lake Mills, Wis.). A third team Division III PING All-American, Wendt had the best finish at nationals for the Blugolds this season. He completed the four-day championship tied for 83rd with 316 strokes. Wendt averaged 74.9 strokes per round this year, the best on the team. Wendt competed in 11 tournaments this year and had his best finish at the Blugolds’ Frank Wrigglesworth Invite, tying for first place.

Derek Bauer (Sr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Eagan) received the team’s Most Improved Award. Last season Bauer averaged 77.5 strokes over 12 rounds, while he competed in 23.5 rounds this season and averaged 76.7. His highest finishes came in the fall when he took second place twice. He also tied for third once during the spring. At nationals, Bauer finished third on the team and tied for 100th overall with 320 strokes.

Aaron Nelson (So.-River Falls, Wis.) was the team’s Rookie of the Year. In his first season with the team, Nelson averaged 79.8 strokes, playing in every round for the Blugolds. Last fall Nelson had his best finish of the season, tying for fifth place at the Viterbo University Invitational.

The Blugolds finished the season with an overall record of 93-43-1 and finished in 23rd place out of 35 teams at the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championship.
