SCHAEUBLE, WICKLUND GET D3FOOTBALL.COM RECOGNITION
Sterling, Va. – UW-Eau Claire’s Mitch Schaeuble (Sr.-Wrightstown) and Dave Wicklund (Jr.-Kewaskum) were named to the third team of the D3football.com All-West Region Team. The announcement was made by Pat Coleman, publisher of D3football.com. Schaeuble was selected as a punter and Wicklund as a safety. Both had previously been tabbed to the All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference first team at those positions. Schaeuble became a dual threat for second-year coach Todd Glaser when he took over the quarterback position in the fifth game of the season. He ranked second in the league in punting with a 40.7 average for 52 attempts. He put 18 of his kicks inside the 20 and only six went into the end zone for touchbacks. Fourteen of his kicks were fair caught and opponents managed to return only 23 punts against the Blugolds and then only for an average of 4.7 yards per return. This compares to the Blugolds who returned 32 punts for an average of 12.8 per return. Wicklund was third on the team in tackles with 100 but led the Blugolds in solo tackles with 73. He also intercepted three passes which he returned a total of 53 yards and broke up five passes. He also forced one fumble. He tied for sixth among WIAC defenders in tackles with an average of 8.3 per game. It was only fitting that the Blugold players receiving post-season recognition were a defender and special teams player. The Blugolds struggled on offense this season after starting quarterback Kyle Paulson was injured in the second game of the season. As a result, the Blugolds utilized six different players at quarterback and relied on their defense and special teams to help them to a second-place finish in the league with a 5-2 mark and a 9-3 overall record as they advanced to the second round of the NCAA playoffs. Two of the Blugolds’ losses came against UW-Whitewater and Bethel College, both of whom reached the semifinals of the NCAA championship. All-West Region Team - TP -
