Lecture course developing basic awareness and appreciation of painting, sculpture, related arts, architecture, their ideas and execution. Study of the artist and the components of art.

A studio course developing awareness of art forms through studio experience in various media.
 

  107 Foundations: Drawing and Composition

An introduction to free hand descriptive drawing and visual composition using a variety of materials and techniques. Using drawing processes to solve problems and express ideas. Prerequisite for all studio art courses numbered 200 and above.

Introduction to the materials, methods, compositions, and purposes of three-dimensional art. Prerequisite for all studio art courses numbered 200 and above.

An intermediate drawing class designed for students to experiment with contemporary approaches to drawing in a variety of media.
 

  244 Painting I

Exploration of painting, introducing the technical and expressive nature of the oil medium in relation to subject and concept.
 

  247 Painting-Watercolor I
2 crs (0-4). P: Art 101 and 102 or 130, or consent of instructors. GE-IVA.

Painting on paper. Exploration of watercolor and acrylic media. Emphasis on the development of individual concepts.
 

  249 Introduction to Prints

An introductory studio course exploring a range of approaches and possibilities in four basic printmaking areas, including relief, intaglio, lithography, and serigraphy.
 

  250 Printmaking-Relief-Beginning

Assignments present introductory experiences with concentration on linocut and woodblock print processes. Selection of wood grain, cutting tools, color ink mixing, and registration; subtractive color printing and past and contemporary printmakers are studied.

An introductory studio course in prints on paper from inked incisions of a variety of base plates.
 

  252 Printmaking-Serigraphy-Beginning

Studio course exploring the silk screen process using a variety of stencil techniques.
 

  253 Printmaking-Lithography-Beginning
3 crs (0-6). P: Art 101 and 102. GE-IVA.

Studio course directed toward the lithographic process, including the use of the wax crayon, tusche method, and other experimental approaches.
 

  264 Sculpture I

A studio introduction which explores a variety of techniques and concepts relating to contemporary sculpture.
 

  274 Graphic Design I: Compositional Principles of Graphic Design

Lecture/Studio course which establishes a base for two-dimensional design, visual perception, and the interrelationship of design communication with society. Expressions via electronic media and graphic software will be explored.

Introduction to the basic principles, practices, and history of lettering and typographical letterform structures as it relates to graphic design.
 

  276 Graphic Design III: Symbology
3 crs (0-6). P: Art 274. Not for GE.

Studio course investing the potential of symbolic imagery. Visual metaphors, (simple to complex), and their significance to graphic communication are applied. Visitations to studios and agencies involved with the production of such imagery can be expected.
 

  281 Introduction to Photography as an Art Form
3 crs (2-4). GE-IVA.

A studio introduction to the aesthetics and techniques of photography as a fine arts medium of expression. Students produce images with black and white materials. Contemporary and historic images are also viewed and discussed.
 

291 Special Topics in Art
1-3 crs. P: Consent of instructor. Not for GE.

Topics depend on interests of students and faculty and are not typically covered in regular art studio courses. Topics may be specific media concerns, art subjects, artmaking procedures, contemporary art concerns, or other issues.
