Blugolds revel and reconnect during Homecoming 2011
Foundation subsidiary acquires St. Bede Monastery
 The Sisters of the Order of Saint Benedict have announced the sale of St. Bede Monastery to a subsidiary of the UW-Eau Claire Foundation Inc.
The monastery property includes 112 mostly wooded acres in the Town of Washington and three building complexes totaling approximately 80,000 square feet. It is located three miles south of the UW-Eau Claire campus. The sale price was $1 million.
In announcing the sale, Sister Michaela Hedican, prioress of the Benedictine order, said the sisters were pleased to be able to sell St. Bede's to a foundation whose mission is to support UW-Eau Claire.
The first intended use of St. Bede's by the university is as the relocation site for the current Children's Center. Full story. 
Vernon, Carey return to alma mater for Bon Iver concerts

Internationally acclaimed indie-rock group Bon Iver will perform two concerts in December at UW-Eau Claire, the alma mater of Bon Iver's leader/singer-songwriter Justin Vernon and band member Sean Carey.
Bon Iver will conclude its December tour of North America with Dec. 12 and 13 concerts at UW-Eau Claire, where Vernon earned a degree in comparative studies in religion in 2004 and where Carey, who performs on vocals and percussion, earned a music degree in 2007. Vernon, an Eau Claire native, and Carey both continue to reside in the Eau Claire area when not touring.
The December concerts will be Bon Iver's first performances at UW-Eau Claire. Ticket sales will begin Oct. 28. Full story.
UW-Eau Claire continues to attract bright students
.jpg) UW-Eau Claire continues to be a popular choice for talented students in the Midwest, with 10,900 students enrolled for the fall 2011 semester. That number includes 1,950 incoming freshmen selected from 7,000 applicants, 600 transfer students and 570 graduate students.
"UW-Eau Claire is having another strong year," said Kristina Anderson, director of admissions. "Even in a down economy, UW-Eau Claire continues to attract great students."
The average ACT score for the incoming freshman class is 24.3, well above the average for both Wisconsin and Minnesota, with 21 percent of the students coming from the top 10 percent of their high school classes and 65 percent coming from the top 30 percent of their classes. Full story.
UW-Eau Claire among top producers of Fulbright scholars
 UW-Eau Claire is among the top producers of 2011-12 U.S. Fulbright fellows, according to a list recently released by the Fulbright Program.
UW-Eau Claire is one of 14 institutions included in the master's institution category on the Fulbright Program's list of colleges and universities that produced the most U.S. Fulbright fellows. UW-Eau Claire is the only Wisconsin institution included on the list of top Fulbright producers in the master's category. The list was published Oct. 23 in the online issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education.
Three UW-Eau Claire students were awarded Fulbright awards this year at the time the list was published. A UW-Eau Claire alumna also already received an award for 2011-12. Full story.
This year's Connections magazine now online

The 2011 issue of Connections magazine, produced by UW-Eau Claire’s College of Education and Human Sciences, is now available online. The theme for this year's issue is "connections across the globe."
Connections includes college news and feature stories about students, faculty, alumni and programs affiliated with the academic departments of communication sciences and disorders, education studies, kinesiology, social work and special education. Also included in the 2010 issue is the CoEHS annual report for 2010-11. |
Grant supports university-based preschool literacy program

A UW-Eau Claire-based program that helps support early childhood literacy efforts in the Chippewa Valley has received a $93,679 grant from Serve Wisconsin, the Wisconsin National and Community Service Board that funds AmeriCorps programs in the state.
Dr. Donald Mowry, director of UW-Eau Claire's Center for Service-Learning, and Dr. Donna Lehmkuhl, director of the Early Childhood Literacy Intervention Program, Services and Evaluation (ECLIPSE) at UW-Eau Claire, received the grant to fund the second year of the ECLIPSE program. The program was formerly known as Jumpstart and operated under that name for eight years at UW-Eau Claire before the ECLIPSE program began.
Through the ECLIPSE program, 45 UW-Eau Claire student AmeriCorps volunteers work with 3- to 5-year-old children from the Chippewa Valley on their school readiness. The college students work one-on-one with preschool children in the areas of language, literacy and social interaction skills. ECLIPSE currently partners with four early childhood programs in Eau Claire and Altoona. Full story.
International Folk Fair set for Oct. 30
 UW-Eau Claire will host the 2011 International Folk Fair from noon-4 p.m. Oct. 30 in Davies Center. The event is free and open to the public.
The International Folk Fair, the largest international festival of its kind in the area, will bring the community together in celebration of culture. The event offers an enriching cultural and educational experience.
Participants can sample foods from around the world, experience the history and languages of other cultures, and be entertained by international performers. Full story.
The Forum to feature social innovator Bill Strickland

The Forum will feature social innovator Bill Strickland Nov. 1 at UW-Eau Claire. His presentation, titled "The Art of Leadership and the Business of Social Change," will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Zorn Arena.
President and chief executive officer of Manchester Bidwell Corp. and its subsidiaries, Strickland has spent the past 30 years transforming the lives of thousands of adults and teens through his arts and vocational training centers. He founded the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild while he was an undergraduate student at the University of Pittsburgh. Working with corporations, community leaders and schools, he and his staff strive to give disadvantaged children and adults the opportunities and tools they need to envision and build a better future.
"The Manchester Craftsmen's Guild is a testament to the power of the arts to transform children's lives," said Hillary Rodham Clinton. "Its students learn much more than how to shape clay, take pictures and appreciate jazz. They leave the Guild knowing that they have the potential and tools to become successful and productive citizens." Full story.
John Raymond Project returns for concert at State Theatre

John Raymond, a 2009 UW-Eau Claire music graduate, returns to Eau Claire for a special night of jazz with an all-star, alumni-filled band — the John Raymond Project.
The New York City-based band, which infuses pop and rock influences, will perform at the State Theatre in downtown Eau Claire at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 5. The event is a CD pre-release party for Raymond's new album, "Strength & Song."
The event is part of Volume One's Back Stage Series and is sponsored by the State Theatre, Volume One and Eau Claire Jazz Inc.

UW-Eau Claire to prohibit weapons in campus buildings
 Beginning in mid-October, signs prohibiting firearms and other weapons will be posted at entrances to all buildings on the UW-Eau Claire campus.
The signs will be posted in compliance with Wisconsin Act 35, signed into law by Gov. Scott Walker in July, which allows the concealed carry of firearms and other weapons by licensed permit holders. The new law takes effect Nov. 1.
Under the law, concealed weapons may be prohibited in state buildings, such as those at UW-Eau Claire, but not on state grounds. Therefore, the university's prohibition of concealed-carry weapons will be effective for campus buildings only, said David Sprick, UW-Eau Claire Police chief. Open carry of weapons continues to be prohibited, Sprick said. Full story.
UW-Eau Claire launches mobile app
 UW-Eau Claire has launched a new mobile application for users of smartphones, tablet computers and other Web-enabled devices.
"We realize that the millennial generation, to which the majority of our students belong, has grown up using mobile technologies as older generations used pen and paper," said Chip Eckardt, UW-Eau Claire's chief information officer. "This generation uses the smartphone as a major communication, entertainment and research tool. We needed to provide software tools that work on these types of devices."
