New campus lot to help relieve upcoming parking shortage

Construction NewsTo help alleviate the shortage of visitor and metered parking due to upcoming campus construction projects, a new 117-stall parking lot is being constructed between Zorn Arena and Schneider Hall at UW-Eau Claire.

The lot, which will contain a combination of designated visitor spaces and metered spaces, will be open before fall semester classes start Sept. 2, said Terry Classen, UW-Eau Claire director of Facilities Planning and Management.

The majority of the spaces will be metered to make up for the loss of metered spaces outside of Phillips Hall and Davies Center during the construction of a new university student center, said Kimberly O'Kelly, UW-Eau Claire coordinator of parking and transportation. The metered area will be either partially or fully reserved for visitors as needed for conferences, workshops and events, she said.

Sod and trees being removed to make way for the $85,000 asphalt lot will be reused in various locations across campus, Classen said.

Updates on campus construction projects can be found on UW-Eau Claire’s facilities projects news website. back to top

Former club baseball player named to All-Decade Team

Greg Aune
Greg Aune

A former pitcher and designated hitter for the UW-Eau Claire club baseball team has been named to the National Club Baseball Association All-Decade Team. Greg Aune, a 2005 UW-Eau Claire graduate, was among those the NCBA determined to be the best of approximately 15,000 athletes from the years 2000-10.

"It's nice to be recognized for any success I was lucky enough to have during my time playing at UW-Eau Claire, especially since we were always playing much larger universities that played more games and received more exposure," said Aune, who played from 2003-05. "The talent of the guys around me allowed me to do some of the things I did. I had the opportunity to play on some excellent teams at UW-Eau Claire."

The UW-Eau Claire team competed in the Club Baseball World Series in 2004 and 2005, and Aune received All-American honors both years — once as a pitcher and once as a designated hitter. Full story. back to top

New sculpture installed outside Phillips Hall

Phillips Hall sculpture

A new sculpture recently was installed outside Phillips Hall at UW-Eau Claire. "The Study of Structure, Blood Cells and Magnetism," located on the southeast side of the building, was designed by artist Susan Walsh to represent the values and activities within the science facilities at Phillips Hall.

"I see all three basic components visually working together and conceptually overlapping in meaningful ways to represent the science departments," said Walsh, a Madison native.

Walsh was commissioned and the sculpture was installed using "Percent for Art Program" funds associated with renovations to Phillips Hall that took place in 2008. Full story. back to top
