Plan now to attend July, August Blugold alumni events The following opportunities to gather with fellow UW-Eau Claire alumni are scheduled for July and August: Monday, Aug. 3: 33rd annual Blugold Booster Golf Outing. Enjoy a day of golf and dining at Hillcrest Golf & Country Club. Everyone will receive a Blugold gift. There will be plenty of food and refreshments plus a chance to win prizes on every hole. Registration deadline is July 24. Wednesday, Aug. 12: Alumni gathering at Pyramid Brew House, Seattle, Wash. Meet fellow UW-Eau Claire alumni during a Blugold gathering from 6 to 8 p.m. at Pyramid Brew House, 1201 First Ave. S., Seattle. Hear a campus update from Chancellor Brian Levin-Stankevich and alumni relations director John Bachmeier. Also enjoy great UW-Eau Claire door prizes, refreshments and appetizers. The event costs $10 (payable at the door) and is sponsored by the UW-Eau Claire Alumni Association.

The board's primary functions are to generate programs and activities for alumni and serve as a public relations organization for the Alumni Association. Shelley Ekblad '86, Eau Claire, Mark Olsen '66, Eau Claire, and Kim Rooney '85, Manitowoc, are retiring from the board this month after serving one three-year term. F. Jeff McCarthy '80, Oregon; Michael D. Richards '00, Wauwatosa; and Terry Schadeberg '85, Waunakee, are retiring after serving two three-year terms. Sam Stagliano '81, Eau Claire, retires as president of the Alumni Association and will serve a one-year term as past president. Katy Kiley '01, Eau Claire, is the new president. Ten new members approved at the March 2009 board meeting will begin serving their terms on Aug. 7. They are Lisa Allaman '96, Sun Prairie, homemaker; Jessica Beaupre, Menomonie, UW-Eau Claire junior; Tom Burton '08, Madison, law student at UW-Madison; Bill Febry '74, Chippewa Falls, business development manager for Cardinal Marketing; Michelle Johnsted '88, Eau Claire, sales representative for Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals Inc.; Shaughnessy Murphy '06, Spokane, Wash., student at Gonzaga University and liaison in the office of U.S. Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers; Brandon Riechers '98, '03, Eau Claire, vice president of consumer lending and collection for Royal Credit Union; Craig Robida '92, Madison, external relations manager for the University of Wisconsin Paul P. Carbone Comprehensive Cancer Center; James Sinkel, Princeton, Minn., UW-Eau Claire junior; and Eric Wan '96, Burnsville, Minn., national director of account management for CVS Caremark. "We are grateful for the dedication and service of the six retiring board members," Kiley said. First recipient of Patches Scholarship named
A UW-Eau Claire English major from Stanley is the first recipient of the Patches Scholarship, established by UW-Eau Claire alumnus Rick Schroder in memory of his brother, Tom Schroder, and Tom's beloved dog, Patches. The scholarship, funded by a gift to the UW-Eau Claire Foundation, is for a nontraditional student with financial need. The recipient of the scholarship, Joel Erickson, is a single parent studying to be a high school English teacher. Full story.
Grant funds precollege awareness program
More than 1,000 fifth-graders in west-central Wisconsin will participate during the next academic year in programming aimed at increasing their access to a college education, thanks to a recent $120,000 grant received by UW-Eau Claire. Gov. Jim Doyle announced UW-Eau Claire's selection for the grant, allocated from the Wisconsin College Access Challenge Grant, which is administered by the Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corp. on behalf of the state. UW-Eau Claire was selected from among nine Wisconsin colleges and universities that competed for the funding to replicate UW-Green Bay's successful Phuture Phoenix program to encourage young at-risk students to pursue higher education. Vicki Funne Reed has been named director of University Recreation & Sport Facilities at UW-Eau Claire. Reed, who has worked for University Recreation for 25 years, has served as interim director of the unit since June 2007. She was appointed as director following an internal search. "I’m delighted that Vicki has accepted the position of director," said Beth Hellwig, vice chancellor for student affairs and dean of students. "She has a passion for health, wellness, intramurals and recreation, as well as for providing quality outdoor experiences for our students." Full story. Jared Michael Koerten, Plover, who graduated from UW-Eau Claire May 16, was recently awarded a $5,000 fellowship by The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest, largest and most selective all-discipline honor society. Koerten graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in history and economics with a minor in global studies. He plans to continue his studies in international relations at the University of Chicago. Koerten is among 100 students nationwide to receive the Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship or Award of Excellence. The Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship Program allocates nearly $380,000 annually to deserving students for first-year graduate or professional study. Currently, 60 fellowships of $5,000 and 40 awards of excellence of $2,000 are awarded each year. Full story. Alumnus receives James Madison Fellowship Robb P. Virgin, a resident of Eagan, Minn., and a teacher at Eau Claire's South Middle School, has been awarded a James Madison Fellowship by the James Madison Memorial Foundation of Washington, D.C. Virgin received a broadfield social studies teaching degree from UW-Eau Claire in 2008. The fellowships support further study of American history by college graduates who aspire to become teachers of American history, American government and social studies in the nation's secondary schools, as well as by experienced secondary school teachers of the same subjects. A total of 55 fellowships were awarded in 2009. Virgin's fellowship will fund up to $24,000 of his course of study toward a master's degree. His program must include a concentration of courses on the history and principles of the U.S. Constitution. Full story. Registration for fall Personal Enrichment Courses now open Registration is now open for this fall's UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education/UW-Extension noncredit Personal Enrichment Courses. Designed for adults interested in learning a new skill, exploring a topic in-depth or developing creative abilities, the programs are taught by UW-Eau Claire faculty/staff and regional experts who are committed to sharing their knowledge and expertise. Classes fill quickly, so early registration is recommended. Full story. Wisconsin Youth Sports Program receives grant
The WYSP program provides a free camp experience for low-income and at-risk youth whose families might not otherwise be able to provide them with safe, educational summer activities. In addition to traditional sports such as basketball and softball, the camp includes educational sessions on topics such as nutrition, drugs and alcohol, math, science and leadership skills. "The grant funding will help WYSP provide the Eagle's View Challenge Ropes Course experience to Chippewa Valley youth aged 10-16 who participate in the program," said Vicki Funne Reed, the WYSP program administrator."This valuable experience assists children with developing self-confidence, communication and leadership skills. Without this grant, the ropes course experience would not be possible." Formerly called the National Youth Sports Program, the camp lost federal support last year when the federal government eliminated funds for the program. The camp, which has served more than 10,000 children for the past 27 years, renamed itself the Wisconsin Youth Sports Program and has continued with area sponsors helping to fund the program.
