Trivia winner shares memories of Blugold days gone by
 |
| UW-Eau Claire students were served in the lunch line in the Davies Center cafeteria in this historic photograph. |
UW-Eau Claire alumna Carol (Guess) Andrus, a 1962 mathematics education graduate, shared the following memories when sending in her answer to the e-View's November Blugold Trivia question:
"I think the original Davies Center was built in 1959. I was part of the freshman class in the fall of '58. We ate our noon meal in the basement cafeteria in Old Main. Cost 68¢. I ate supper every night in the old Blugold Room. also in the basement of Old Main. For 38¢ I had a hot dog on a bun, a glass of milk, and a dish of vanilla ice cream.
"The next fall, 1959, we enjoyed the new cafeteria on the second floor of the Davies Center and the new Blugold on the first floor.
"My sorority had its winter formal in the new center with the theme, 'Evening in Evergreen.'
"Thanks for giving me a chance to relive some good memories."
Andrus was among those who correctly answered that W.R. Davies University Center was constructed in 1959 at a cost of $750,000. Thanks for sharing, Carol! (See this month's Blugold Trivia question.)

Math researchers help communities with emergency plans
 |
Dr. Simei Tong |
Researchers at UW-Eau Claire have created prototype mathematical models and software to help communities better plan for emergencies, a project inspired by the chaos that occurred in the city of New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina.
"Watching Katrina was shocking," said Dr. Simei Tong, associate professor of mathematics. "The city clearly failed to appropriately plan for a disaster. As I watched that situation, I knew I wanted to find ways to use applied mathematics to solve real problems. If we can help cities prepare for disasters, we can reduce the loss of life." Full story.
