Governor’s budget proposal
includes record cuts to UW System
Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle's
recently proposed 2003-05 biennium budget includes the largest
cuts in history — $250 million — to state funding
for the UW System. Doyle also has proposed a tuition increase
of up to $250 a semester. UW-Eau Claire's challenge is "to
manage our reductions in a way that preserves our capacity
for excellence until we come out of this economic downturn,"
said Chancellor Donald Mash in a Feb. 19 message to the
campus community. Visit UW-Eau Claire's State
Budget Update Web site for up-to-date information as
the Wisconsin state budget process moves forward.
Students laud quality,
value of UW-Eau Claire education
Proposed university budget cuts and a possible tuition increase
have spurred some students to reflect on the quality and
value of their UW-Eau Claire education. In a recent issue
of The Spectator, the university's student newspaper, two
student columnists shared their thoughts on the
importance of a liberal arts education and why
a tuition increase for UW System students is appropriate.
To keep up on student debate about campus-related issues,
alumni can subscribe
to the free online edition of The Spectator.

Researchers examine student credit
card use
A group of UW-Eau Claire faculty, staff and students are
trying to identify strategies for helping students use credit
cards wisely, after a survey found students carrying credit
cards in record numbers. While the wise use of credit cards
can help students establish positive credit histories, some
students accumulate debt and unwittingly set themselves
up for financial failure even before they graduate. Read

Scholarship support keeps best and
brightest in Wisconsin
UW-Eau
Claire alumni and friends have an opportunity to help keep
Wisconsin's best and brightest students in the state, contributing
to its healthy future. The Wisconsin Academic Excellence
Scholarship program matches private donations with funding
from the state to provide annual $2,250 scholarships for
outstanding high school graduates who choose to attend UW-Eau
Claire. (UW-Eau Claire currently ranks second among UW System
schools in the number of WAES recipients enrolled.) An annual
gift of $1,000 establishes a WAES program scholarship in
the donor's name. Donors also may choose to establish an
endowed WAES fund through a commitment of $25,000, which
can be completed over a period of up to five years. An endowed
fund sponsors an annual WAES scholarship in perpetuity.
Gifts to support the WAES program are recognized as contributions
to Fulfilling
the Promise of Excellence, the UW-Eau Claire Foundation’s
ongoing comprehensive fund-raising campaign to secure $35
million in private support by July 2005 for the university’s
people and programs. For more information on supporting
a WAES scholarship, contact Kimera Way, UW-Eau Claire executive
director of development, by calling (715) 836-5180 or sending
e-mail to waykk@uwec.edu.
