Steve BaumgardnerSteve Baumgardner, 70, died May 10, 2017, in Eau Claire. Baumgardner, professor emeritus of psychology, was a member of UW-Eau Claire's psychology faculty from 1973-2007. He held a bachelor's degree from the University of Washington, a master's degree from Western Washington State University and a doctorate from Kansas State University. Memorials may be directed to the ALS Support Group of Northwest Wisconsin or Friends of the White River.

James BenningJames Benning, 88, died May 13, 2017, in Eau Claire. Benning, professor emeritus of psychology, was a member of UW-Eau Claire's psychology faculty from 1957-97. He held a bachelor's degree from Eau Claire State Teachers College (now UW-Eau Claire), and a master's degree and doctorate from Colorado State College. Memorials may be directed to the Blugold Emergency Fund of the UW-Eau Claire Foundation or to Wildlife Rehabilitation and Release Inc. in Colfax.

John Buchholz, 76, died June 18, 2016, in Eau Claire. Buchholz, UW-Eau Claire professor emeritus of English, was a member of the UW-Eau Claire faculty from 1969 until his retirement in 2001. A lifelong musician, Buchholz was one of the founding members of the UW-Eau Claire Jazz Ensemble in 1962. In 2012 the university's John L. Buchholz Jazz Library was created in his honor. Buchholz held a bachelor's degree from UW-Eau Claire and a doctorate from Texas Christian University. Memorials may be directed to the John L. Shyam Sunder Chadha died Oct. 22, 2016, in St. Paul, Minnesota. Chadha, professor emeritus of mathematics, was a member of the UW-Eau Claire faculty from 1984-2013. Chadha held a doctorate from Delhi University Hans Raj College.

James FolstadJames Folstad, 66, died May 16, 2016, in Eau Claire. Folstad was a longtime UW-Eau Claire Mail Services staff member.

Phyllis GoffPhyllis Goff, 91, died April 3, 2017, in Eau Claire. Goff, who served as an administrative assistant in the UW-Eau Claire provost's office for many years, retired in 1989.


William HeimsteadWilliam Heimstead, 78, died Jan. 29, 2017, in Eau Claire. Heimstead, a longtime UW-Eau Claire staff member in facilities management, was a member of the university's grounds crew until his retirement in 2001.

Rosemary HelwigRosemary Helwig, 91, died Jan. 29, 2017, in Eau Claire. Helwig was a longtime UW-Eau Claire staff member in the Student Senate and Dean of Students offices. She held a degree from the Minnesota School of Business.

John Johnson, 83, died Jan. 29, 2017. Johnson, UW-Eau Claire professor emeritus of mathematics, served on the faculty from 1966 until his retirement in 1995. He held a bachelor' degree from UW-Eau Claire and a master's degree from the University of Northern Iowa. Memorials may be directed to a UW-Eau Claire Foundation mathematics scholarship fund.

Stephen KatrositsStephen Katrosits, 73, died May 10, 2016, in Eau Claire. Katrosits, professor emeritus of art, served on the UW-Eau Claire faculty from 1968 until his retirement in 2003. He held bachelor's and master's degrees from UW-Milwaukee. Memorials may be directed to the Stephen Katrosits New York Field Studies Scholarship Fund of the UW-Eau Claire Foundation.

Ryan Klim, 21, died Jan. 8, 2017. Klim, of Neenah, was a UW-Eau Claire senior majoring in business marketing.

Jean Lamb, 86, died Oct. 23, 2016, in Eau Claire. Lamb, assistant professor emerita of nursing, was a member of the UW-Eau Claire faculty from 1970-92. She held a bachelor's degree from Berea College and a master's degree from the University of Pittsburgh.

Ralph Marking, 81, died Nov. 3, 2016, in Richfield, Minnesota. Marking, professor emeritus of chemistry, was a member of the UW-Eau Claire faculty from 1963-97. He held a bachelor's degree from UW-La Crosse and a doctorate from the University of Minnesota. Memorials may be directed to the Chemistry Department Scholarship Fund of the UW-Eau Claire Foundation.

Beverly Miller Beverly Miller, 61, died Feb. 26, 2017, in Altoona. Miller was a staff member in Learning and Technology Services from 1979 until her retirement in 2016. She held a bachelor's degree from UW-Eau Claire.

James Olson, 91, died Nov. 10, 2016, in Eau Claire. Olson, professor emeritus of English, was a member of the UW-Eau Claire faculty from 1959-87. He held a bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota and a doctorate from UW-Madison. Memorials may be directed to the Beaver Creek Reserve in Fall Creek.

Janet PattersonJanet Patterson, 69, died May 10, 2017. Patterson was a retired reserve library supervisor in UW-Eau Claire's McIntyre Library from 1981-2011. She held a bachelor's degree from the University of Denver's Lamont School of Music and a master's degree from Texas Woman's University. Among her survivors is her husband, Donald Patterson, professor emeritus of music. Memorials may be directed to the United Church of God, an International Association, Cincinnati, Ohio.

Theodore Peters, 82, died Sept. 20, 2016, in Eau Claire. Peters, professor emeritus of communication sciences and disorders, served on the UW-Eau Claire faculty from 1971 until his retirement in 1993. Among his survivors is his daughter Dr. Gretchen Peters, UW-Eau Claire professor of music. Peters held bachelor's and master's degrees from Western Michigan University and a doctorate from Michigan State University. Memorials may be directed to Feed My People food bank in Eau Claire.

Walter ReidWalter Reid, 72, died May 10, 2016, in Eau Claire. Reid, professor emeritus of mathematics, was a member of UW-Eau Claire faculty from 1979 until his retirement in 2012. He held a master's degree from the University of Utah and a doctorate from the University of Colorado, Boulder. Memorials may be directed to the Walter M. Reid Mathematics Scholarship Fund of the UW-Eau Claire Foundation.

Carl Searing, 88, died Oct. 24, 2016, in Eau Claire. Searing, a retired, longtime UW-Eau Claire staff member, served as a librarian in McIntyre Library from 1970-74 and as a purchasing agent in Facilities Management until his retirement in 1992. After retirement, he returned to the university to work in the lock shop. Searing held a bachelor's degree from Utica College and a master's degree from UW-Madison. Memorials may be directed to the "little railroad in the park" of the Community Parks Association, Eau Claire.

Dianne (Sneen) Shane, 67, died Aug. 31, 2016, in Eau Claire. Shane was a longtime UW-Eau Claire employee who served in a number of different departments. She held a bachelor's degree from Northland College.

M. James Simonsen, 87, died Jan. 11, 2017, in North Oaks, Minnesota. Simonsen, professor emeritus of physics, served on the UW-Eau Claire faculty from 1957 until his retirement in 1993. Simonsen held a bachelor's degree from North Central College and a master's degree from UW-Madison. Memorials may be directed to Beaver Creek Reserve, Fall Creek.

Birdell Snudden, 80, died Oct. 29, 2016, in Eau Claire. Snudden, professor emeritus of biology, was a member of the UW-Eau Claire faculty from 1966-96. He held bachelor's and doctoral degrees from UW-Madison.
