English Placement Testing

Description of the English Placement Test:

The UW English Placement Test consists of three subtests. These subtests are English Usage, Sentence Correction, and Reading Comprehension. The entire English Placement Test is designed to be completed in 80 minutes, which requires an average of approximately 30 seconds per test item. This is sufficient time for most students to complete the test.

The test is referred to as the UWENGL. Two scores are reported.

UWENGL Total: This score contains all the items on the test. The score scale is 150-850. This is the score that is used for placement into English 110.
UWENGL Reading: This score contains only the items from the Reading Comprehension section. The score scale is 150-850.

Where are the scores reported:

Students and faculty can both view the results of placement scores on MyBlugold.

  • Students should choose Option 6 (Grades, G.P.A.s…) and then option # 5 (Admission Information and Test Scores).

  • Faculty must choose a particular student and then choose option # 4 (Admission Information and Test Scores).

Interpreting the results:

Placement into English 110 is based on EITHER the English placement test or the ACT English score or the SAT. Use the appropriate chart.
