Go Back to 1st Year Requirements for All Majors

Political Science
First Year Advising 2008-2009

Printable Version Printable Version

Political Science offers several different majors, including the 36-credit Liberal Arts major, a 36-credit Teaching major, a comprehensive major with a Legal Studies emphasis, and a comprehensive major with a World Politics emphasis.

Beyond the required prerequisites (Pols 110, American National Politics, and Pols 122, Introduction to World Politics), Political Science is a non-sequential program. However, there are courses that should not be taken until a student has acquired the recommended years of experience as indicated in the Guidelines for Advisors and Assistants document.

The Political Science Department also offers certificates in Campaign Consulting, International Affairs and Legal Studies. Information on each of these is readily available at the Political Science office, Schneider Social Science 200A

COURSE SELECTION
UW-Eau Claire respects individual differences. This guide complements rather than substitutes for individual advising.

ESSENTIAL COURSES
The following is a list of courses students should take during their first year to graduate in four years:

PROGRAM READINESS
Beyond the comments made above, there are no special instructions in terms of specific prerequisites for program readiness. However, the general guidelines offered in the Sample Program section are partially based on the belief that the courses recommended for the third and fourth years are usually taken with more success after a student has acquired general experience with Political Science methods, jargon and perspectives, as well as becoming comfortable with taking essay exams and writing in an analytical fashion.

COURSES NOT RECOMMENDED FOR FIRST SEMESTER
Pols 260, Pols 265 (Problems of the Developing Nations) or Pols 290 (Introduction to Political Analysis)

GENERAL EDUCATION
Most Political Science majors take the Bachelor of Arts track and should plan their General Education courses accordingly.

Specific certificates and their requirements are listed within their applicable department or college.

Students majoring in Political Science may obtain these certificates:

  • Campaign Consulting
