Hello All,
I know you are terribly busy this time of year, but wanted to let you know of a few opportunities on campus and in the community. Don't forget to look at the Activities & Programs website for information on the campus films, the Artist & Forum Series, and the Cabin performers http://www.uwec.edu/dc/ap/index.html.

If you read the Spectator you will know that the past few issues have included articles on nontraditional students. Attention is being focused on the fact that we are advocating for use of space in Davies Center for a new Oasis room; as many of you have stated that you do not now use the current room due to location, amenities in the room, etc. I will keep you posted as to the outcome of our request for the vacated space in Davies Center. Two students have agreed to plead our case to the advisory board who will make the decision as to whether or not we get the space.

If anyone has any final comments on why you would like the Oasis room in Davies Center, please email to me by tomorrow. Let's keep our fingers crossed that we get the space! Have a great week and please let me know if I can be of any assistance to you at this busy time.

Character Education is a community effort to create moral behaviors where respect, honesty and kindness are modeled, taught, expected, celebrated, and continuously practiced in everyday interactions.

You are cordially invited to join us on Monday, December 11, at 7:00 p.m., in the South Middle School Auditorium, as Sandy Swartz, coordinator of Character in Action, School District of Jefferson, shares with us "The Jefferson Way" - in the schools, community and businesses. This presentation will illustrate Jefferson's character education initiative, which involves over 200 businesses, all of the public and private schools in Jefferson and the local churches.

Mrs. Swartz will describe what character education is, the outcomes for a school and community once integrated and take us step-by-step through the process that the School District of Jefferson utilized to become known state-wide for it's initiative. Jefferson's Character in Action project has received numerous awards and recognition from Governor Doyle, Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin and State Superintendent of Schools Elizabeth Burmaster.

Winterim Course Opportunity:
This is a message from the instructors of IDIS 301 and they LOVE having nontraditional students in their class: Can you believe, two "different" professors have been teaching a "delectable" class in a "deranged" manner at the UW-Eau Claire for almost 10 years? It is true! And it is the "best kept secret" regarding interim and winterim classes. We have decided to keep this secret no longer, so we are inviting you to join us in January of 2007 to explore body/mind connections in a warm, wintery manner. You can join us in this venture from wherever you are, as this is an online adventure.

The course is Exploration in Mind/Body Connections, taught by Dr. Robert S. Tomlinson, Psychology and Dr. Susan D. Moch, Family Health Nursing. We bring a great variety of majors together to explore both experience and literature around mind/body connections. We dig deep and listen to each other in a manner that makes January in Wisconsin pass very quickly. Join us! You will be thankful for the opportunity. We have tantalizing testimony regarding the class from Art, Physics, Philosophy, Biology, Nursing, Psychology, Kinesiology, Education, and Business majors.

Commencement: Commencement Dec. 16: First of all--congratulations to all of you who are graduating on December 16th! A few of you have emailed me looking for additional commencement tickets. If anyone is NOT attending the ceremony or has EXTRA tickets to share, please let me know so we can give them to others who are looking for extras. Thank you in advance.

Did you know about these community opportunities?
CHRISTMAS MORNING FREE BREAKFAST AND GIFTS: For the last 13 years, The Community Table has had a team of volunteers prepare and serve Christmas breakfast. This year is no exception.

Breakfast will be served from 8:00 am to 10:00 am at The Community Table located at 1300 First Avenue in Eau Claire (near Luther Hospital). They also have gifts for everyone that comes in.

The gifts are really nice things including portable CD players for the teens, microwaves or DVD players and food for families, coloring books for the tots, and clothing for babies. They also will have drawings for bicycles and other great gifts. This is a wonderful opportunity for families on a limited budget.

If you want more information contact Nadine Jentzsch, Director, (715) 835-4977.

Free Credit Report: After the holidays might be a good time to check your credit report. Did you know you can get a free credit report each year? To receive one you may call 1-877-322-8228 or go to this website: www.annualcreditreport.com. Also, if you have had credit accounts in the past but have paid them off and are no longer using them you should send letters to the creditors to close your accounts. Having an open account even with a zero balance can negatively affect your credit rating.

West Central Wisconsin's Building Re-Use Center Helping the Homeless:
Building Hope, a building supply warehouse reuse center, is a place to donate and shop for quality new and used building supplies including doors, windows, kitchen and bath cabinets, plumbing fixtures, carpet or carpet tiles, and other miscellaneous construction related items.

All proceeds from sales will go to help fund services to the poor, homeless, and disadvantaged served by HGM. Donations are accepted during normal store hours at both HGM store locations.

A pickup service is also available for large items; call for details. All donations are tax deductible.

A major determinant on the store's success will be and has been a loyal volunteer and donor base. This is the first store of its kind anywhere in west central Wisconsin.

Hope Gospel Mission Building Hope, 2108 Western Avenue, Eau Claire, WI 54703. Phone: (715) 838-2084.

Have a great Week!

Hello All,
I hope that you had a restful and blessed Thanksgiving break and are refreshed and ready for the last stretch of the semester. I can hardly believe that it is nearly December and finals week is only three weeks away! I have some exciting news to share with you regarding a fellow nontraditional student. Barbara Weisenberger, Theatre Arts Major, has been selected to deliver the commencement speech for the 2 p.m. ceremony on Dec. 16th. What a great tribute to nontraditional students! Congratulations to Barbara!

Speaking of commencement, several of you emailed me about needing additional commencement tickets. I spoke with Service Center staff and they will not be doing a second round of ticket distribution. I was told that your best bet for getting more tickets is to put a notice on the Want Ads board in Davies Center asking for additional tickets and looking for ads from those who have extras to give. Also "word of mouth"--speak to others to let them know you are looking. Good luck!

Mornings are best_____ Afternoons are best _____ Noon hours are best _____
____ No, I cannot be involved right now but am interested in future meetings.

Two things I read this week that I want to share with you:

DID YOU KNOW....?

.....it is only six weeks until final exams week? Seven weeks until Christmas?
.....library staff is available to answer ANY question you have on using the library and finding material? Save yourself time--just ask!
.....the original Blugold System will be discontinued at the end of this semester? You will want to become familiar with registering for classes on MyBlugold.
.....you need only be enrolled for 6 or more credits as an undergraduate student to be considered for financial aid?

As we near the end of the fall semester, please keep in mind that there are several campus resources available to you if you are needing some extra help--the Academic Skills Center, Counseling Services, the office of Nontraditional Student Services. Please let me know if I can connect you with any office staff.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My closing Nurturing Thought will be a little longer this time. For those of you who may be experiencing grief this holiday season, I want to offer you some special words (taken from Hospice Ties, a newsletter from Northwest Wisconsin HomeCare). To all, take care--and my wishes for a peaceful, reflective Thanksgiving day.

Thanksgiving, Christmas and Hanukkah can be particularly difficult for people who have lost a friend or family member, especially within the last year. Times that were once looked upon with happy anticipation can now be filled with sadness and apprehension over how to "celebrate" when that special someone is no longer there. Here are some suggestions that may be helpful:
Embrace the memories--while making new traditions, remember the old.
Share your memories--it's good to laugh and cry.
Plan ahead--you may want to make some changes. Do things you feel are necessary, not what you think others may feel you should do.
Ask for what you need and accept help--remember others are grieving too and may wish to be a part of your plans. Tell people what you need.
Be kind to yourself--get the rest, nourishment and affection you need and focus on what you want to do. Be tolerant and compassionate toward yourself.

Hello All,
What a beautiful, sunny, warm Monday! Sure does a world of good for our attitudes!

September 26th, 2006

Welcome to the fall 2006 semester!

I am so glad to have finally received the email distribution list of nontraditional students enrolled at UW-Eau Claire this fall so that I can begin to be in contact with you. I will be sending informational emails to you probably every week. I hope that you will find the information helpful and concise. I will try to limit my contact with you to once a week (or every other week so as not to inundate you with unnecessary emails. There will be a couple of you that will ask me to remove your name from my email distribution list and, unfortunately, I will not be able to do that. I have no control over the list--that list is controlled by the Registration Office and as long as you are an enrolled student at UWEC, you will be on the list to receive my emails. If you do not find the information helpful, (I hope that isn't the case), simply delete the messages you receive from me.
With that said--on to this week's:
News and Tips:

Brown Bag Session:
This Wednesday, September 27, 12:00 noon - 1:00 p.m. Birchwood Room, Davies Center for ANY nontraditional student that would like to sit and chat with other nontrad students. Visitor to examine campus support for diversity, use of resources for minority students:
William Ponder, Vice President for student affairs at Eastern Washington University, will visit UW-Eau Claire September 27-30 to examine the effectiveness of the way resources are currently expended for recruitment and retention of minority students. He also will review the effectiveness of the current organizational structure of student life functions in relation to supporting diversity on campus.

During his visit, Ponder will meet with UW-Eau Claire faculty, staff and students to gather their observations and recommendations. He will submit a report outlining his findings and recommendations to Chancellor Brian Levin-Stankevich by the end of October.

Ponder will be available to meet with students wishing to provide feedback from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Sept. 28 and from 11 a.m. - noon September 29 in the Potawatomi Room, Davies Center.

Study Abroad Myth Busters
Many students think that they can't study abroad because they don't speak a foreign language. Don't let that old myth stop you. It is true that 30 years ago most programs focused on language learning. Although UW-Eau Claire has a number of programs that focus on language learning, most of UW-Eau Claire programs do NOT have a language requirement.

Some of these programs are in English-speaking countries:
Australia, England, Scotland, Ireland, Northern Ireland (ISEP), New Zealand (ISEP).

Other programs take you to a non-English speaking country where you can take courses in English:
Bulgaria (ISEP), China, Costa Rica, Denmark, Fiji (ISEP), Ghana (ISEP), Japan, Latvia, Malta (ISEP), Mexico (summer business program), The Netherlands (ISEP), South Africa-Summer and Semester/Year, South Korea, Sweden, Thailand.
