Nurturing Thought:
Just for Today
Just for today – I will live through the next 12 hours and not try to tackle all of life’s problems at once.
Just for today -I will improve my mind. I will learn something useful. I will read something that requires thought and concentration.
Just for today - I will be agreeable. I will look my best, speak in a well-modulated voice, and be courteous and considerate.
Just for today - I will not find fault with friend, relative or colleague. I will not try to change or improve anyone but myself.
Just for today - I will do a good turn and keep it a secret. If anyone finds out, it won’t count.
Just for today - I will have a program. I might not follow it exactly, but I will have it. I will save myself from two enemies—hurry and indecision.
Just for today - I will do two things I don’t want to do, just because I need the discipline.
Just for today - I will believe in myself. I will give my best to the world and feel confident that the world will give its best to me.

Greetings!
I know how you must be feeling with the end of the semester rapidly approaching and many projects to finish. The end of the spring semester is always especially busy for me, too, with extra activities on campus. I love it, though, and hope you, too, in the midst of all the craziness, are finding moments in which you can enjoy your experience here and appreciate the awesomeness that you are a student at UW-Eau Claire! Just remember during those times of stress and feelings of being overwhelmed, there are resources on campus to help you--the Academic Skills Center, Counseling Services, support groups--just let me know how I can help and I'll point you in the right direction.
Tip from a nontrad on Badger Care Plus health insurance for families:
“the other part of its coverage is dental coverage, however it unfortunately does not reimburse dental offices dollar for dollar or coverage is very limited for dental procedures. I would encourage persons interested in this type of coverage to ask lots of questions about coverage and where they will find providers to accept this type of insurance.”
Student Parent Group Brown Bag, Thursday, April 24th 12:10-1:00 p.m. in the Potawatomi Room of Davies Center. Get together with other nontradtional students to share your parenting joys and woes. Having the support of other students who are also parents can be the one thing that keeps you going and keeps you motivated! Plan to be there and bring your lunch.
Mark Your Calendar and Plan to Attend:
End of year picnic for nontraditional students and their families, Friday, May 9th, 5:00 p.m. at the Oak Pavilion in Carson Park. Potluck—bring a dish to pass and your own drink and utensils. Hosted by the UWEC Children’s Center.
Commencement tickets now available for pick up at the Service Center in Davies Center. If you are not planning on attending the commencement ceremony, please let me know if you would be willing to share your tickets with other nontraditional students who are looking for additional tickets. Several students have asked me to help them find additional tickets.

Hi Everyone and Welcome Back from Spring Break!
I hope that you all had a great week off and a nice Easter. I had a good week of office catch-up and spring cleaning and also a couple of days at home (with the stomach flu, unfortunately). But I was well enough to see my grandchildren over the weekend, which was a blessing.
Kathy and I spent time cleaning and organizing your Oasis Room. We now have two bulletin boards, one with campus information and activities and the other for community information. I ask that we not tape anything to the walls any longer, as some of the paint has come off when we take down items that have been taped on. A can of coffee grounds and filters was donated so feel free to cook a pot of coffee when you are in there. The refrigerator has some “overdue” items in there, so please, if you left anything in there, clean it out today. We will clean out the refrigerator tomorrow and toss anything that is not currently dated. We have a printer in the room again. Remember to provide your own printer paper and to print any major projects in the computer labs.

In light of recent reported cases of sexual assault involving a man unlawfully entering residences in the student housing district, CASA & WAGE will be hosting a supportive discussion session Wednesday, March 12th, from 1pm-2pm, in the WAGE Center (Schofield 37A) for students who are frightened, concerned, or feel their lives have been impacted by the following:

Greetings!
It struck me this past weekend that I have entered the “next phase of my life”. My granddaughter, who will be four years old next month, invited me to her “Spring Sing” to be held in May at her preschool . It seems like just a short time ago that I was attending such events for my little girls. Time flies and there is nothing we can do about that. What we can do is learn to appreciate each day and to be in the moment. I hope that you are each appreciating your experience of being a student at UW-Eau Claire.
I stumbled upon a great website this past week. It is located in the Academic Skills Center website and it has a variety of information on “How to Study In…” (many different topic areas). Check it out! http://www.uwec.edu/asc/Faculty/howToStudy.htm.

Our Nontraditional Student Senate Representative asked me to pass this message along to you:
PLEASE COME TO SHOW YOUR SUPPORT!
Student Senate has voted (26-0-0) in favor of removing an important symbol of diversity on our campus!
The Diversity Resource Center (DRC) was implemented by students in 1999 to support, embrace and promote diversity on this campus, and this room is in danger of being turned into a student resource center, which demonstrates that no one on student senate stood up for this symbol of diversity on this campus!
Your help is NEEDED!
Please come to the Student Senate meeting on Monday (3/3) at 6PM SHARP in the Tamarack room of Davies. It will take less than an hour, and even if you don't want to use your voice to express your concern, your appearance is more than words can say. Greetings!
As I type this newsletter I can see on my shelf the picture of my husband, son, and myself when we were in Hawaii in 2004 and I am reminded of how warm the sun felt and I feel hope that spring is on its way here too!
We are now in our fifth week of classes and most of you are now feeling settled into the semester—new students are finding your way around and, hopefully, feeling comfortable on campus. If you do not feel comfortable--feel like you are still struggling, not sure about your study skills, feeling you might need a little extra help with courses-- the Academic Skills Center offers free assistance to students. ASC is located in the Old Library, 2112. Stop in to set up an appointment for help. Next door to the ASC is the Counseling Services Office. Counseling Services offers free counseling for those who might wish to talk with someone about personal issues in their lives. Stop in the office, Old Library 2122, or call 836-5521 to speak with a counselor confidentially and free of charge.
I’m going to hang out at the Oasis room tomorrow over the lunch hour. If anyone has a question, wants to stop by to visit, or have lunch with me, please do so! Wednesday, noon – 1:00.
I will be offering two sessions of a Scholarship Writing Tips Workshop on:
Tuesday March 4, 9-10 a.m. OR Wednesday, March 5, 1-2 p.m. Both sessions will be held in the Wisconsin Room of Davies Center. Information will include where to look for scholarships and how to write an award winning essay. Plan to come to one of the workshops!

PARENTING TIP:
“Catch” your child being good. A steady diet of disapproval, nagging and criticism does not teach your child to improve. Instead focus your comments on what is done and what is done well, rather than on what is done poorly or not at all. (from Luther Midelfort EAP Quarterly).
JUST FOR FUN:
Did you know .....
….. “Dreamt" is the only English word that ends in the letters "mt"?

Nurturing Thought:
Many times, our worst change becomes our best change. Having the courage to move on is challenging yet exhilarating. Staying "stuck" is not an option whether it's in your life, labor or love. We can all find the people and the energy to help us overcome obstacles we all face. No matter what you face... you are NOT alone. Believing that there is a tomorrow gives us hope, creativity, and vitality.
What challenges are you facing where change needs to be made?
Begin today.

Students must apply for financial aid each year to determine eligibility for need based financial aid and some non-need based financial aid. Aid is awarded when a student’s application is complete and is based on the funds available at that time. UW -Eau Claire has a priority date of April 15th. To apply for financial aid, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This form collects the information needed to determine financial aid eligibility. Students and parents may sign the on-line FAFSA electronically if they have a federal PIN number. If you do not already have a U.S. Department of Education Personal Identification Number (PIN), you can apply for one at http://www.pin.ed.gov. With your PINs, you and your student can electronically sign the FAFSA on the Web. The PIN simplifies the application process and allows you to get your results faster. UW-Eau Claire’s Federal School Code is 003917.
Completing the FAFSA by the priority date allows students the opportunity to receive consideration for all financial aid.
Additionally, about 30 percent of our applicants are required to submit signed copies of income tax forms (both parent and student). You do not need to submit tax forms unless requested to do so by the UW-Eau Claire Financial Aid Office.
Free Help in Completing the FAFSA
College Goal Sunday is scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 10 at Chippewa Valley Technical College in Eau Claire and will offer free advice from financial aid professionals in completing the FAFSA.

Welcome back and welcome to all new students this semester! I hope that you had a lovely winter break and are all refreshed and recharged for a new semester! I had a working break, but did manage to have the week of Christmas and New Year’s off. Had the opportunity to spend time with family and with my NEW grandson, born a week before Christmas. That makes 3! I am very blessed to have 3 healthy, happy grandchildren. I know that each of you has many blessings in your life too.
For those of you who have not yet met me, my name is Bonnie Isaacson and I am the adviser to nontraditional students at UW-Eau Claire. I can be a resource to you above and beyond your academic adviser. I work Monday through Thursday and am available to meet with you or to answer your email questions. This informational newsletter will be sent to you each Monday or Tuesday to let you know of activities on campus, upcoming deadline dates for things such as class withdrawal, scholarship applications, registration information, community resources, and anything else that I think will be of interest and importance to you as a student who is balancing many activities in your day. I will always close with a nurturing thought-- something that I have come across in my reading that I pass on to you to keep you inspired as your focus on your goal of receiving a baccalaureate degree from this fine university. Take a moment each time you set foot on campus to remember the privilege that is yours as you proudly say that you are enrolled as a student at the University of Wisconsin in Eau Claire. You have every right to feel very proud of your accomplishments!
Each semester there are a few students who email me to say they would like to be removed from my list. The distribution list is automatically created and sent to me from the Registration Office so that I can be in contact with you students. I do not have the ability to remove any names from the list. As long as you are an enrolled student at UWEC you will be on the list and receive messages from me. I try to send only one or two emails a week as I know that you are all busy people and that it is annoying to have several email messages to go through. Please do not ask me to remove you from the list because I am not be able to do that. If you find throughout the semester that my messages are not useful to you, simply delete them when you see them in your inbox. (I hope that is not the case )
I would especially like to welcome the new nontraditional students just beginning this semester. I hope that your first weeks of class are turning out to be all that you hoped for and more! If any of you have questions or concerns remember that I am your campus connection. If there is a question that I do not have an answer for immediately, I will certainly find out the answer for you. If any new student would like to have a "seasoned" nontrad student as a mentor, please complete the attached mentor application form and return to me. I will match you up with a nontraditional student who can help you as you learn your way around the university. If you are a “seasoned” student and would like to be a mentor please let me know via email.
Now on to this weeks’ news:
I would like to invite you to visit the “Oasis Room” located in the lower level of Davies Center, room 127. The room is there for you to relax in between classes, have your lunch, study, or visit with other nontraditional students. We’re doing an OPEN HOUSE next week, Thursday, Feb. 7th, from 11:30-1:30 to welcome you back to the new semester. Stop in to see the room, meet other nontraditional students and me, and enjoy some refreshments!

Important Tip:
My assistant, Kathy, (superwoman!) did some research regarding stapler and 3-hole punch use for students. If you are working in the Oasis Room in Davies Center the best option is Printing Services (just around the corner by the bookstore). They have a punch, tape, stapler, etc. on the work counter across from the window. The Library Reference Desk also has a stapler and punch set out for student use. The Information Center in Davies would let a student use the stapler on request, and the Computer Lab would have a stapler and punch available on request.
