Happy Finals Week!
For some of you this week may have approached far too quickly. For others, it didn't come soon enough! I hope that your week is going well. I want to say a special congratulations to all the nontraditional students who will be graduating on Saturday. What an awesome accomplishment for you! Please take time to relish in the moment-- to appreciate the accomplishment, and to take pride in achieving your goal. You and your families can be so proud!
For those of you who are still students, I will be around all summer and available if you have any questions or needs. My office is open Monday through Thursday.
SURVEY:
Thank you to all of you who completed and submitted the survey on Nontraditional Student Services I sent last week. Below is the link to the short survey and if you have not yet completed it you may still do so. The survey will remain open for a couple of weeks. This survey is intended to evaluate your experience with the Nontraditional Student Services Office and to make certain that we are serving you as best we can. The survey is completely confidential. Information will be used to assess how we are meeting your needs and to plan activities and programs for future semesters. Just click on the link below and submit when you are finished:
https://www.uwec.edu/select_survey/TakeSurvey.asp?SurveyID=3LLn650I3883K.
I will be compiling the data this summer and planning activities and meetings according to the results of the survey. Thanks for helping out!
Scholarships:
The Denise Bertucci Scholarship application is due on June 1. Also the Clara B. Small scholarship application is due on July 1. Check out both scholarships at: http://www.uwec.edu/advising/nss/scholar.htm. Summertime is a great time to work on your scholarship essay to have ready as scholarship applications become due. If you have questions on scholarships or application tips, check out the NSS website at: www.uwec.edu/advising/nss/index.htm
Summer Activities:
For family activities this summer, keep checking the UWEC website for a variety of campus activities--movies, the Planetarium, musical events. etc. The link is: http://www.uwec.edu/eventcal/. In the community, there are several great opportunities for families through the Family Resource Center. Check out their great website at:http://www.frcec.org/. They offers several programs and classes for parents as well as summer playgroups, and Summer Play 'N Learn for kids.
I hope each of you has a great summer, whether you are in class, enjoying time with your families, vacationing, relaxing. I look forward to seeing many of you back in the fall!
Nurturing Thought:
Happiness is like jam. You can't spread even a little without getting some on yourself.

Nurturing Thought:
(This is from the Honors Banquet speech given by nontraditional student, Deb Chopper)
If I accept you as you are, I will make you worse;
However, if I treat you as though you are what you are capable of becoming,
I help you become that.

Happy May 1st! Eight days and counting until finals begin....
Some courses have common exams and students should refer to the Common Exam Schedule for a listing of those exam times.
It is important to know that no student will be permitted to reschedule a final examination unless there are extraordinary circumstances over which the student has no control (e.g. hospitalization or military obligation). If you have a serious issue arise which prevents you from taking an exam, you should contact the Student Development and Diversity Office for assistance. If a student has three or more examinations scheduled for one day he or she may request the change of an individual examination time. A request for a change in the time of an individual final examination must be approved by the instructor, the department chair, and the assistant/associate dean of the college in which the course is offered. Make-up examinations must be scheduled during finals week or later and must be arranged by the student with the instructor.
As the end of the semester nears, it is important to examine what is left to do and how you are going to accomplish it all. It may be a little overwhelming, but one way to get through it is to create your own "Final Exam Battle Plan". This worksheet allows you to determine the things you may need to do to get caught up (if you are somewhat behind), what assignments or projects still need to be completed, and how to plan your preparations for final exams. You can access the pdf version of the "Final Exam Battle Plan" here or you can stop by the Academic Skills Center and pick one up.
An electronic grade report is e-mailed to each enrolled student at their university e-mail account. Students can also access their grades via the web using MyBlugold. The grade submission deadline is 4 p.m. on May 20. The electronic grade report is typically emailed to the student within 48 hours of the submission deadline. The report includes, in addition to grades for courses just completed, the student's semester GPA, resident GPA, classification, degree program, major, faculty adviser, academic status (if unsatisfactory), and academic warnings or special notices. The grade report links to information for students in academic difficulty. If you have a designation of academic warning, probation or suspension you should follow that link to get more information.

Vocation does not come from willfulness. It comes from listening. I must listen to my life and try to understand what it is truly about--quite apart from what I would like it to be about--or my life will never represent anything real in the world,

Hello All,
What a lovely spring weekend and Monday morning. The rain last night was such a welcome --the grass looks so green this morning and the birds were especially cheerful. It's a great day to be alive! I had the pleasure of spending yesterday afternoon with my daughter and grandchildren celebrating my granddaughter's third birthday. What a joy! I hope that you had a pleasurable weekend too, with fun and happiness and something to smile about. The next few weeks will be busy and hectic! Keep everything in perspective--ask for help when needed--take time to relax (if even for a couple of minutes each day)--LAUGH!--be positive. It really will help you through the end of the semester and finals week.

Hello All,
I know how you are all feeling with the end of the semester coming up soon and many projects to finish. The end of the spring semester is always especially busy for me, too, with extra activities on campus. I love it, though, and hope you too, in the midst of all the craziness, are finding moments to enjoy your experience here and appreciate the awesomeness that you are a student at UW-Eau Claire! Just remember, during those times of stress and feelings of being overwhelmed, that there are resources on campus to help you--the Academic Skills Center, Counseling Services, support groups--just let me know how I can help and I'll point you in the right direction. We had a great discussion yesterday afternoon on time management at our first nontrad support group meeting. There were six of us there and several others responded with an interest, the time just didn't work. We will meet two different times next week to accommodate a variety of schedules. Our next nontrad group meeting will be on Tuesday, April 24th from noon-12:50 in Library 5029. Another meeting is set for Wednesday, April 25th from 5:15 - 6:00 p.m., in the Career Discovery Lab, near my office, Schofield Hall 226. I hope to see many of you next week!
There was a typo in the Wellness Shack information in my newsletter last week. The phone number is 855-7705 and not 822-7705.

Nontraditional Student Would Like Assistance with a second Class Survey:
Hi there friends, family, and colleagues,
I know many of you have helped me by taking a survey for my preliminary research regarding patient/provider communication. Thank you so much. We collected nearly 300 responses! Well, I have to hit you up one more time (the last time.) This survey is designed to help me evaluate the effects of the verbally aggressive follower on leadership style and communication. If you help me with my research it will take about 15 minutes and I will be very grateful.
If you would like to help me with this, please copy and paste the following link into your web browser or just click the link. It will take you to a brief, 15-minute survey.

Thanks to all who submitted nominations of their favorite faculty memberfor the OWL (Older, Wiser Learner) award. The recipient this year will be Dr. Rosemary Battalio of the Special Education department. The decision was a difficult one for the committee to make as there were some terrific nominations. Nominees will remain in the pool for two more years so you can certainly resubmit their nomination again next year. All nominees will receive a certificate of their nomination and their department chair will be notified that they were nominated as well. Dr. Battalio will be recognized and receive her plaque on April 18th during the Student Development & Diversity Awards ceremony on campus.

Nurturing Thought:
"If you can shape it in your mind, you will find it in your life."
Hello and Happy April!
Predictions are of a dark, cooler week, but look at it this way--the cooler, rainy weather will really make the grass green when the sun is back and it is warmer. Also this is a good week to keep your nose to the grind and keep up with your studies! I have a daughter who, when she gets down and I point out to her the things that are actually going right will say, "Mom, why do you always have to look at the positive side of things?" Well, that's how I try to go through life. There are a lot of "icky" things that happen to us, but if most of us stop to think about it--there are a tremendous amount of things that are going just right too. Live life to the fullest and be happy--this will make others around you more pleasant too.
Brown Bag Tomorrow:
We will be having a brown bag, Tuesday, from noon to 1:00 in the Maple Room of Davies Center (around the corner from the bookstore--across from The Corner Store). Come and have lunch with other nontrad students. Even if you only have a few minutes to spare stop in for as little or as long as you can. We will be discussing what we would like to ask for in the new Oasis room, the former hair salon in Davies Center, which will be renovated over the summer for nontraditional student use in the fall semester. If you can't make the brown bag and have suggestions--email me.
Library Room open for use for nontraditional students:
The Graduate Studies room in the library is now available for all nontraditional students to use for study. The room is located on the fifth floor, room 5029. To gain access to the combination to the room (the room is kept locked at all times) nontraditional students are asked to pick up a letter from my office to take to the Circulation Desk at the library. The letter serves as "permission" for library staff to give you the combination. You will also be asked to sign a form agreeing to the terms for the use of the room. Several nontraditional students have already picked up their letters and are making good use of the room. We will be having a "Preview the Room Day" next Thursday, April 12th, from 11 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. This is an opportunity to see the room which I feel you will enjoy and appreciate. I will be there on the 12th with letters for you and you can get the combination at the Circulation Desk for future use. The room will be open on the 12th between 11 and 1 so you will not need a combination for the preview. Refreshments will be served.
Registration News:
MONDAY, APRIL 9th--Last day to withdraw from individual full semester classes and last day to withdraw from the university.
Scholarship News:
Single parent scholarship applications due on May 1 for dispersement for fall semester.
Financial Aid News:
Did you know that if you were awarded federal work-study and are not using it, you may convert some or all of that money to student loan? For more information on how this may work for you, contact the Financial Aid Office in Schofield Hall room 115 or call 836-3373.
Survey Assistance Needed for Nontrad Student:
Hi there friends, family, and colleagues,
For my Scientific Writing for Expert Audiences course this semester, two of my fellow students and myself are conducting a survey for research purposes. We are interested in evaluating the impact that web sites like WebMD have on doctor/patient communication.
If you would like to help us with this, please copy and paste the following link into your web browser or just click the link. It will take you to a brief, 5-minute survey. Taking the survey will help us immensely.
Survey link: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=834803569596
In addition to your participation in this survey, we would really appreciate if you forwarded this email on to any of your own contacts so as to ensure a large response rate for our research project. We understand that forwards are not always appreciated, however if you could pass on to those who would not be irritated we would be grateful. We need to gather as many responses as possible for a conclusive report. We would be more than happy to share the report/results with you, if you are interested. If this is irritating YOU, please disregard and delete and accept our apologies. :)
We are compiling data SOON so if you participate please note the deadline.
Thank you very much!

Hello All,
Greetings on this warm spring day!
This is the kind of weather I have been waiting for. I love the warmer weather and listening to the birds singing. I love it when my granddaughter comes to visit and we listen to "the birdies" and watch them eat from the bird feeder. It doesn't get much better than that!
I was handed a "Wellness" card at a presentation that I went to recently and wanted to share it with you. These are great reminders as we go through each day of our lives.
Wellness: 1. Be excited about life! 2. Count your blessings daily! 3. Laugh often! 4. Don't make excuses! 5. Expect the best from yourself! 6. Care about others! 7. Respect yourself! 8. Set goals! 9. Use positive self-talk! 10. Hang with positive people! 11. Tell those you love you do! 12. Keep a positive attitude!

Hello All,
This week is starting out much better for me this week than last. The sun is shining and we have the hope of 40 degrees by the weekend! Spring is just around the corner and that means you as students will be very busy in the next weeks until the end of the semester. (Sorry, guess we're not even at mid-term yet). But with all the activities on campus and projects that you need to finish, you need to prioritize and keep your focus on the goal. If you are having any difficulties please address them sooner rather than later. I would be happy to discuss any issues with you and give you guidance on any questions you may have.
Remember, being a student at UW-Eau Claire is an opportunity of a lifetime (for many of you) and I really want you to be successful students here. I read an interesting fact on sleep recently. Getting 6-8 hours less sleep than usual over a week can impair mental efficiency and reaction time, and cause depression, anxiety and irritability. Remember to take care of yourself by getting as much sleep each night as you can!

BROWN BAG LUNCH TOMORROW, TUESDAY:
Join me in the Badger Room tomorrow from 11:30-12:30 to discuss issues, meet other nontraditional students, share some good "down time" together. I've been meeting new faces there this semester and it is great! Hope you can make it--even if for just a few minutes.

NOMINATIONS SOUGHT for OUTSTANDING FACULTY Who Teach, Mentor and Encourage Nontraditional Students at UW-Eau Claire:
The Nontraditional Student Services Office and the nontraditional students at UW-Eau Claire annually recognizes an outstanding faculty member who best exemplifies both the art and the science of teaching returning adult students. This would include both the tangible and intangible qualities that mark a university professor as being the kind of professional, in and out the classroom, that is particularly skilled in nurturing the intellectual and professional development of nontraditional students, regardless of where the students are in their life's journey. We realize that adult students can sometimes present particular challenges to faculty.
We wish to recognize those faculty who accept those challenges and provide the kind of learning environment where the life experiences of adult students are honored, the intellectual demands spur further discovery and growth, and classroom strategies are appropriately varied and flexible.
If you would like to nominate an outstanding faculty member for this award, please write a letter of nomination (via email is fine) explaining your reasons for the nomination. All faculty who are nominated will receive a Certificate of Appreciation, and the Nontraditional Student Advisory Committee will select one faculty member from among the nominees to receive the "OWL AWARD."
The OWL AWARD is a special plaque that recognizes one faculty member annually for helping "Older Wiser Learners" reach their academic potential. This award will be presented to the winner in April.
Nominations due to me (isaacsbj@uwec.edu) by Thursday, March 8th.

Inge Auerbacher was born on December 31, 1934 in Kippenheim, Germany, a small town near the Black Forest. The night of November 10, 1938, the Nazi's full power of terror and destruction culminated in Kristallnacht (Night of Broken Glass), when people broke all of the windows at the Auerbacher's home. She and her parents were deported to Theresienstadt Concentration Camp in Czechoslovakia in August of 1942 with 1200 other people. Of the more than 15,000 children that passed through Theresienstadt, Inge was one of only 100 children that survived to see the end of WWII. Three years later, liberation finally came for Theresienstadt on May 8, 1945. After liberation, the Auerbachers learned that 13 of their immediate family, as well as their extended family were all killed by the Nazis.
In May 1946, Inge's parents made the decision to immigrate to the United States. They settled in Queens, New York where Inge continues to live to this day. Inge has committed her life to teaching people about diversity, tolerance and humanity. She has written four books about her experiences, and won countless awards for her achievements.

Hello All,
All I can say is, I hope you snow lovers are happy. This is your week! I am very sorry that I did not get a newsletter out to you yesterday. I was at a conference last Thursday and Friday and it really does take a day to just dig out from all the emails and other things that piled up while I was gone. I don't plan to be out again in the near future so will try to catch up and stay in better touch with you.
The conference was good--I had the chance to hear various speakers and network with colleagues. I also spent time with a grad school friend which was great. It reminded me how important it is to have time for ourselves away from family and the office. Hope your life allows that for you from time to time as well.
The keynote speaker at the conference was Erin Gruwell. Some of you may have read her book or saw the movie about her and her students, The Freedom Writers Diary. Erin was so energetic and interesting to listen to. I was mesmerized for the entire hour. She brought many of us to tears with her story of helping 150 students who had been "written off" by the education system. With her support, all 150 graduated from high school and are pursuing college careers.
Listening to her really moved me and reaffirmed my belief that we just don't know a persons potential. I love an anonymous quote that I read, "The best thing you can give someone is a chance." Erin believed that and because of that 150 lives are changed forever. I hope your life is changing too as you learn and grow as a student at UW-Eau Claire.

John Perricone
Author and educator, speaks on Zen and the Art of Public School Teaching
John Perricone, health educator, karate expert and author, applies Eastern philosophy to teaching, stating, "We teach who we are." Perricone who teaches in the Maine-Endwell School District in upstate New York, discusses the concept of philosophical identity - the sense of mission or purpose that teachers carry, or don't carry, into the classroom - in his new book, "Zen and the Art of Public School Teaching." Perricone, who has been an educator for 23 years, will explain how a teacher's philosophical identity can make the job of teaching a joy or a chore.
Perricone has received numerous local, state and national excellence-in-teaching awards. He has received Maine-Endwell's Distinguished Teacher Award for eight consecutive years since its inception.
In addition to teaching, Perricone has studied karate for 32 years. He uses his karate expertise to train teachers throughout New York in the nationally recognized Educational Karate Program - a character education program emphasizing non-violence, mental and physical fitness and universal values of integrity, self-respect and respect for others. He also was an instructor of Hidy Ochiai's Karate of Cortland for 16 years.

Bonnie Isaacson
Nontraditional Student Adviser
Schofield Hall 226E

isaacsbj@uwec.edu
Hello to All and Welcome to the Spring Semester at UW-Eau Claire
My name is Bonnie Isaacson and I am the adviser to nontraditional students at UW-Eau Claire. I can be a resource to you above and beyond your academic adviser. I work 80% and am available on Monday through Thursday to meet with you or to answer your email questions. This informational newsletter will be sent to you each Monday or Tuesday to let you know of activities on campus, upcoming deadline dates for things such as class withdrawals, scholarship applications, registration information, community resources, and anything else that I think will be of interest and importance to you as a student who is balancing many activities in your day. I will always close with a nurturing thought--something that I have come across in my reading that I pass on to you to keep you inspired as your focus on your goal of receiving a baccalaureate degree from this fine university. Take a moment each time you set foot on campus to remember the privilege that is yours as you proudly say that you are enrolled as a student at the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire. You have every right to feel very proud of your accomplishments!
Each semester there are few students who email me to say they would like to be removed from my list and no longer wish to receive emails from me. The distribution list is automatically created and sent to me from the Registration Office so that I can be in contact with you students. I do not have the ability to remove any names from the list. As long as you are an enrolled student at UWEC you will be on the list and receive messages from me. I try to send only one or two emails a week as I know that you are all busy people and that it is annoying to have several email messages to go through. Please do not ask me to remove you from the list because I will not be able to do that. If you find throughout the semester that my messages are not useful to you, simply delete them when you see them in your inbox. I hope that is not the case :) This first newsletter may be a bit longer than most because I have a lot of information to share with you as we beginning the semester.
I would especially like to welcome the new nontraditional students just beginning this spring semester. I hope that your first few days of class are turning out to be all that you hoped for and more! If any of you nontraditional students have questions or concerns remember that I am your campus connection. If there is a questions that I do no have an answer for immediately, I will certainly find out the answer for you. If any new student would like to have a "seasoned" nontraditional student as a mentor, please complete the mentor application form and return to me, Mentor Application. I will match you up with a nontraditional student who can help you as you learn your way around the university.

Attention Female Student!
UW-Eau Claire is performing a production of Eve Ensler's "The Vagina Monologues," again this year. This is an all woman play that consists of serious, comic, and enjoyable stories about women.
My name is Sarah Lanners, and I am one of the student directors of this production. As I'm sure you've noticed, Eau Claire is predominately a campus of 18-22 year old white women. However, this show was written based on the stories and lives of sorts of women; women of different ethnicity. Therefore, I wanted to make sure that all students knew about the opportunity to act in this production. I'd like to personally invite you to come and audition to be a part of the show! Auditions are Monday, January 29 and Wednesday 31 from 7-10 p.m. in the Towers Basement. You only need to come one night and you can come any time between 7:00 - 10:00 p.m.
I hope some of you take advantage of being a part of this wonderful production! If you have any questions, don't hesitate to email me: lannersj@uwec.edu

Graduate Student Needing Assistance:
I am looking for volunteers ages 6 to 16. I am a graduate student at UWEC enrolled in the School Psychology program. Part of our professional training is practice in standardized assessments. Unfortunately, for us students the burden on finding children to practice assessments falls upon us and many of us are new to the area. I am wondering if any of you are willing to volunteer your children/grandchildren/nieces/nephews/friends' children ages 6-16 for assessment practices.
Each testing session is typically no more than two hours and includes activities that kids usually enjoy. I would prefer to administer the test in HSS on campus but I can also give it at your home if necessary. I am willing to come to your home, pick up the child, etc. We cannot pay our participants, but the child usually gets to pick a prize or two. Because this is only practice testing, we cannot share your child's scores with you. These testing sessions can be arranged at times that are convenient to you and will occur various times throughout the semester.
Right now, I am looking for contact information (a phone number will suffice) and the ages of children that you would be willing to lend. If you give me permission in your email I would like to share your contact number with the other students in the program (there are only 8 of us and we have all had background checks, as we currently work in area schools as part of our training). The practice takes place throughout the semester. If you would like more information, please feel to email me ( tiffyg1983@gmail.com) and I can answer any questions you might have.
Thanks,
Tiffannie Gallus
