Faculty Handbook

Academic Standing/Progress

POLICY: A student remains in good academic standing if at the end of the fall or spring semester of enrollment:

  1. the student has a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or above AND
  2. the student has a semester grade point average of 2.0 or above AND
  3. the student remained registered for, and received grades for at least 75% of the total semester registration from the end of the drop period until the end of the semester.

NOTE: Academic standing is not changed after summer or winterim.

Warnings related to the 75% rule:

  • "Semester Registration" is the total number of credits (excluding audits) for which the student is registered at any point in the semester after the close of the drop period (the end of the first two weeks of classes).

Example: If a student has 15 credits, withdraws from a four credit course (after the drop period), and adds a 1 credit course, the semester registration is 16 credits.

  • A student may always withdraw from a single course without academic penalty, even if it puts him/her below 75%.
  • Incompletes and "U's" do not constitute completion.
  • Remember, students can be granted "exemption to academic penalty" for excess withdrawals by an associate/assistant dean in the student's College.

STAGES OF NEGATIVE ACADEMIC STANDING :

  1. Academic Warning results the first time a student fails to meet these standards.
Academic Warning is issued only once during a student's academic career.
  2. Probation is the second stage . It is issued should a student fail to meet academic standards in any semester subsequent to the issuance of an Academic Warning.
  3. Suspension occurs if:
  • At the end of a semester on probation, the student fails to regain good academic standing OR
  • If the student fails to achieve a 1.0 grade point average in any semester of enrollment . (No Academic Warning is given).

NOTES:

  • Freshmen are sometimes admitted on academic warning. If they obtain good standing after the first semester and subsequently fall into negative academic standing, they are given "academic warning" again rather than probation.
  • Academic standing appears on the unofficial transcript by semester. Only the most recent standing appears on the official transcript.
  • The first suspension is for one semester. If a student returns and receives a second suspension, it is for one year.
