From earliest times, human beings have given meaning to life through artistic expressions. In our contemporary world, visual awareness and the communication of visual ideas have become increasingly significant. The UW-Eau Claire art & design program responds to the needs of a visually oriented world through instruction in studio art, art history, art education, graphic design and the exhibition of art.
Why study art & design?
- Prepare for careers in graphic design, art education, photography, illustration, ceramics, painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing or attend graduate school.
- Integrate and analyze knowledge to creatively communicate ideas, emotions and social conditions.
- Develop visual problem-solving skills.
- Develop abilities in using technical equipment from hand tools to computers, from lathes to video equipment.

Minor
Art History (24 credits)
High school preparation
- Students planning to major in art & design should have a strong interest in the visual arts and will probably have some level of art experience in high school classes although no prior experience is required. A portfolio is not required for admission to the programs.
- All students who enroll at UW-Eau Claire are required to have a minimum of 17 college preparatory units including:
– 4 years of English (at least 3 composition and literature)
– 2 years of a single foreign language
– 3 years of math (algebra, geometry, 1 advanced college preparatory math)
– 3 years of natural science
– 3 years of social science (1 must be world or American history)
– 2 additional units in the areas already mentioned or other academic areas
