What was your residence experience like on campus?
I had a blast living in Sutherland! The square shape of the dorm made my floor feel like a little community. There was always something planned for us to do as a group whether it was a movie night, making valentines, or just walking to the “caf” together—and I’m still friends with many of the girls!
What's your favorite Blugold tradition?
Homecoming week! Personally, I’ve never run for Homecoming Queen, but I really admire the students who have. The whole week, campus is filled with free food and coupons! One girl last semester brought puppies and kittens for students to pet to get the vote! The atmosphere during that week is energetic, and I love to see so much school spirit.
What is something that you’ve discovered about UWEC that you didn’t know when you got here as a freshman?
I didn’t realize how much there is to do in the Eau Claire community. Downtown has a budget theater, local bookstores, coffee shops, and, of course, Obsessions Chocolates. They have chocolate potato chips—one word…YUM! Since I’ve had my bike here the last 3 years, I’ve also discovered how much exploring there is to do. The bike trails never seem to end, and if I’m lucky sometimes, I’ll see a deer!
What’s been your favorite class so far?
BIO 100, which is surprising coming from an English major! I just enjoyed getting out of my comfort zone, and I liked how the professor got us outside of the classroom and into the environment. One day the professor brought in live Hissing Cockroaches and made us each hold one! Yes, it was gross, but it was hilarious to see the students try and pick them up—just a one-of-a-kind experience!
Where’s your favorite local hotspot?
The budget theater downtown on Barstow Ave. It was originally built in the 1940’s so it has beautiful architecture and a very old-fashioned atmosphere. They show recently-released movies for only $3, and since it’s only a 10 minute walk from campus, it’s very convenient for students.
Why did you choose UWEC?
There are two main reasons for why I chose Eau Claire: the size and the beauty. It’s big enough that I’m constantly meeting new people and having opportunities to get involved, but small enough that I have a personal connection with my professors. I think the beauty aspect speaks for itself, but I have to say if you are on upper campus and you have an 8AM class, you’ll get to see the sun rising over the hills while you’re walking to class… it's better than a cup of coffee!
Finish the following sentence: YOU feel Blugold pride when…
Students or faculty work together toward a common cause. It’s exciting to see the campus rally about what they believe in. It makes me want to be a more involved citizen!
