Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) is a medical engineer on her first space shuttle mission, led by veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney). While they are on an otherwise routine spacewalk, their shuttle is destroyed by debris. Stone and Kowalsky are left completely alone, tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness. The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, they realize that the only way home may be to go further out into the infinite and unforgiving realm of deep space. Nominated for 10 Academy Awards including Best Picture, the film won the Golden Globe and DGA award for Best Director.
