A chance meeting in a San Francisco bird shop between socialite Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren) and attorney Mitch Brenner (Rod Taylor) sets in motion an inexplicable series of attacks by the most benign of creatures. The residents of Bodega Bay, California, are suddenly threatened by a plague of birds in director Alfred Hitchcock's purest expression of an arbitrary universe. Adapted by Evan Hunter from an even bleaker story by Daphne du Maurier, the film co-stars Suzanne Pleshette, Jessica Tandy and Veronica Cartwright. Under the guidance of bird trainer Ray Berwirk, Hitchcock employed thousands of real birds and his own ingenuity to create the reality of seemingly impossible events. Composer Bernard Herrmann oversaw the pioneering sound design, creating a score that is devoid of music.
