A Royal Affair is based on the true story of the 18th-century love triangle involving Denmark's insane King Christian VII (Mikkel Boe Følsgaard), his English wife Queen Caroline Mathilde (Alicia Vikander) and their German physician Johann Friedrich Struensee (Mads Mikkelsen). Married as a teenager to the mentally unstable king, Queen Caroline finds herself drawn to the compassionate and intelligent Struensee, and the two are soon in love and working together to reform Danish society. The opulent historical drama won two Silver Bears at the Berlin International Film Festival and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
Admission is free at the door with a Blugold Card or an International Film Society membership. Community members may buy an individual IFS membership for $4; a family membership costs $10. The annual memberships are available at the Service Center, 715-836-3727, in Davies Center’s east lobby.
