Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan) have been incomparable friends for 14 years. They've spent much of that time arguing out how their friendship can survive when Harry steadfastly believes that men and women can’t be friends. Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby costar as their best friends who, by contrast, can allow themselves to discover love when it’s right in front of them. The Washington Post called the film "a sweet, embraceable comedy, a moonstruck Manhattan romance that, like a Gershwin tune, turns the sighs and glances, the spats and reconciliations, all the cliches of the heart into infectious melody. It’s a movie that walks on air." Nora Ephron’s wit-filled original screenplay was nominated for an Academy Award and received a BAFTA Film Award.
