Tangshan, 1976: Seven-year-old twins are buried in the rubble of one of deadliest earthquakes of the 20th century. The rescue team explains to their mother that freeing either child will almost certainly cause the death of the other. Forced to make the most difficult decision of her life, she finally chooses to save her son. Left behind as dead, the little girl miraculously survives for several more days before being pulled clear by another rescue team — unbeknownst to her brother and mother. Aftershock follows the family members on their separate journeys over the course of the next 32 years, as they build lives shadowed by the traumatic experience of the earthquake. They eventually face each other, and the decisions of the past.

Inspired by the novel Tangshan dadizhen (Great Tangshan Earthquake) by Zhang Ling, the film stars Xu Fang, Zhang Jingchu and Li Chen as mother, daughter and son. Chen Daoming (Hero) costars. The epic melodrama broke all box-office records in China.
