AIS 101 Introduction to American Indian History and Cultures: 3 credits (3-0). F. GE-III. Introduction to the different disciplinary perspectives available for the study of American Indian cultures, with an emphasis on history, anthropology, and law. |
AIS 102 Introduction to American Indian Expressive Cultures: 3 credits (3-0). Sp. GE-IVE. Introduction to a broad range of American Indian expressive cultures, from traditional to contemporary forms, in art, literature, oral traditions, music, and film. |
AIS 111 Studies in American Indian Languages I: 4 credits (4-0). F. GE-I. Field Trip required. Introduction to American Indian language families and concentrated study of one specific language within its cultural context, with emphasis on speaking and listening skills. Culture as the human means of environmental adaptation. Explores cross-cultural regularities and the range of variation in human behavior. Comparison of widely different economic, social, political and religious systems. |
AIS/HIST 240 American Indian History: 3 credits (3-0). Credit maybe earned in History 240 or AIS 240, but not both. GE-IVC. An introduction to the history of the native peoples of the United States with major emphasis upon European contact, the mutual interaction of European and American Indian cultures, and the resulting adaptations and conflicts. |

The course will examine the recent trends in American Indian politics beginning iwth the American Indian Movement through the present. AIS/GEOG 311 Middle America: 3 credits (3-0). Credit can be earned in Geog 311 or AIS 311, but not both. GE-III. Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean Islands, with special attention to the pre-Columbian roots of the mainland in relation to the modern nations, and an analysis of current problems in the island nations. |

AIS/ARTH 324 Native Art of the Americas: 3 credits (3-0). Credit may be earned in Art History 324 or AIS 324, but not both. GE-IVA. A comparative study of art and its cultural relationships among Native Americans. Carving, painting, architecture and functional crafts will be studied. |
AIS/ANTH 325 North American Indians: 3 credits (3-0). Credit can be earned in Anth 325 or AIS 325, but not both. NOTE: Previous completion of Anthropology 161 or AIS 161 strongly recommended. GE-III. Comparative analysis, by culture area, of traditional American Indian economies, social and political organization, religion and philosophy. AIS/RELS 330 Indigenous Religions of the Americas: 3 credits (3-0). F. odd-numbered years. P: One course in religious studies, philosophy, American Indian Studies, or consent of instructor. GE-IVB. This course will introduce indigenous religions in the cultural contexts of Latin American and North American Indian nations. It will study historical religious development from Pre-Columbian, through Colonial experience, to present day cultural movements. Field trips include museums. |
AIS/ARTH 335 Pre-Columbia Art of Mexico and Central America: 3 credits (3-0). Sp. Credit may be earned in Art History 335 or AIS 335, but not both. GE-IVA. Designed as an upper division survey of the art of the Pre-Columbia civilizations of Mexico and Central America. It covers the Pre-Classic, Classic and Post-Classic art and architecture of the Almec, Maya, Aztec and other Mesoamerican cultures. |

AIS/HIST 468 Studies in American Indian History: 1-3 credits. P: Six credits of history, or junior standing, or consent of instructor. May be repeated up to nine credits. Credit may be earned in History 468 or AIS 468, but not both. GE-IVC. Selected topics depending on student and staff interests. Possible topics include the history of Wisconsin Indians and American Indians in the twentieth century. Consult class schedule or department office for current offering. |
AIS 480 Capstone Course: 3 credits. (3-0). F, Sp. P: AIS 101, 102; core courses and electives in the major. Permission granted by AIS Program Director. Not for GE. Meets service-learning requirement. The capstone course asks a student to integrate previous learning in American Indian Studies to produce a major research project or creative activity within a seminar format. Some travel to an American Indian community is likely. |
AIS/HIST 482 Wisconsin Indian History: 3 credits. (3-0).S, even yrs. P: Permission required. Six credits of history or junior standing or consent of instructor. GE-IV. Study of American Indian communities in Wisconsin with emphasis on the mix of continuity and change in response to outside forces. |
AIS 491 Special Topics: 1-3 credits. F, Sp. Junior or senior standing. Declared AIS major/minor only. Permission of AIS program director required. Repeatable for a maximum of nine credits. Not for GE. Topics will be determined by specific themes related to American Indian Studies by instructor and program director; and based upon student interest and need. Possible topics include treaty right conflicts, tribal sovereignty, Indian mascots and logos, studies in American Indian authors. |
AIS 498 Internships: 1-3 credits. F, Sp. AIS majors only. Student must have completed 24 credits in American Indian Studies. Approval of instructor and program director. Not for GE. Meets service-learning requirement. Supervised assignment outside of the university to health or education institutions or agencies, to American Indian communities, to research institutions, to museums, cultural institutions, or other determined by supervising instructor. |
